The assassination attempt on former President Trump is shocking but not surprising. It’s alarming, but not unique. It has many orders of political effects, but doesn’t represent fundamental change. It’s just another assassination attempt on a Presidential candidate.
These United States of America were created by violence. The U.S.A. was established, uniquely as first in the history of the world, by a piece of paper. But, it was the Army in the field, the Continental Line, which made the Revolution real and carried to victory on the battlefield at Yorktown, Virginia.
There’s been a lot of political violence since then. The first presidential assassination didn’t take place until Lincoln was killed in 1865. Assassinations and attempts followed every twenty years or so until JFK was killed in 1963. Reagan was the last one wounded until this July 13th attack on Trump.
All Americans who were too young to be aware of politics in 1981 or born after have no personal memory of these things. That means everyone under the age of around 50 to 55 – and that’s most Americans is going through this political trauma for the first time.
I’m 73. I remember JFK, Reagan, as well as an attempt against Ford. I recall candidates Bobby Kennedy and George Wallace being shot. Consequently, I see this as another assassination attempt. Not a watershed event.
Indeed, it may be a turning point in the election of 2024. But, it won’t close the divide in the Great U.S. Culture War.
It won’t change the election math the swing states determine all. In those 5 to 9 states, how many votes return or swing to Trump vs how many votes can be harvested and illegal aliens cast votes for Biden. That means the election remains a toss-up.
RFK’s murder didn’t solve the divide over the Vietnam War in 1968. George Wallace’s wounding didn’t unite the country in 1972. Support for the seriously wounded “Gipper” was gone before the get-well bouquets wilted. His political triumph in 1984 was the success of his policies, not sympathy for his injuries.
Today, the Democrats, who I always refer to in their correct political science characterization as Human Secularist Totalitarians, couldn’t go 24 hours before some blamed the assassination attempt on Trump on Trump’s rhetoric. These monumental hypocrites – which is a significant understatement of facts – don’t accept accountability for calling Trump “Hitler”, an existential threat to democracy, racist, etc. for eight years. As if they hadn’t suggested, implied, or outright called for Trump’s death time after time.
The people who say words are violence don’t take responsibility for their own words.
Factually, words aren’t violence. Words which incite violence are illegal. The distinction is lost on the Totalitarians of the Left.
The political theater around this assassination attempt will play out until something else on the political trail, at home or abroad comes to the front burner.
The practical inquiry into what went wrong protecting Trump is a different story. Half the country distrusts the government officials and agencies responsible for the inquiry. Truly distrusts the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security as well as the FBI and Secret Service.
How that inquiry and public report play out is worth tracking. It’ll be an indication of how bad things are in the Federal Government or how much apolitical, professionalism remains in public service at the highest levels.
Sincere condolences to the family of the hero father, Corey Comperatore. Best wishes for a full recovery to those wounded. Grateful for Trump’s near miss being a miss and his show of strength under adversity.
May God bless these United States of America.
