And There Will be Joy

A recent X post by Glen Greenwald highlights the new leftist mantra for the Harris/Walz folks… Joy.[1] One can almost hear the voice of Prince Humperdinck when presenting his bride Buttercup to the people in the movie The Princes Bride.

Leftist totalitarians have always tried to create joy in the minds and hearts of their slaves. Germany’s Nazi Party was quite adept at this, having created the Kraft durch Freude (KdF) organization… “Strength through Joy.”

Strength through Joy was the brainchild of one Robert Ley, an uncouth alcoholic and ardent Nazi who controlled the masses of German workers. The goal of Strength through Joy was, in Ley’s own words, to distract workers from their current material plight by providing them with so-called “moral values,” via artistic, educational, sporting and environmentally “green” activities.

As the vicious person he was, Ley enjoyed tearing the clothes off of his striking wife Inge to show off her Aryan beauty to stunned onlookers. But one must not have too much pity for Frau Ley, for she was herself a crackpot, having visions of seducing Adolf to reach the pinnacle of power in the Third Reich. Unable to achieve her lofty goal, she ultimately committed suicide.[2]

Strength through Joy had its illustrious moments, and its corrupt ones as well. The famous Volkswagen, or “Peoples Car,” serves as a prime example of the latter. Established with a “layaway” plan, much like America’s “S & H Green Stamps,” over 337,000 workers ponied up over $67 million dollars, yet never received a single vehicle. Instead, the handful produced were sent to the German Army.[3] The people never got their money back.

And Strength through Joy did have its bright spots. The cruise liners Robert Ley and Wilhelm Gustloff provided low-cost foreign travel for many workers who otherwise would have never experienced such a luxury.  The cabin arrangements on these boats were classless, at Hitler’s personal request. All class distinctions were to be erased… save for the Nazi elite that ran Germany, of course. “I give my men every freedom. Do anything you like, but don’t be caught at it!” Thus spoke the Führer regarding the “planned corruption” of his entourage.[4]

But all of this “joy” predictably came crashing down. On the night of 30 January 1945, the Wilhelm Gustloff, left Gotenhafen, East Prussia.  She was overloaded five-fold with over 10,500 civilians, wounded soldiers and female military auxiliaries desperate to escape the approaching Soviet army. She took three torpedo hits from a Soviet submarine, and sank in ten minutes.

Over 9,300 died in this tragedy… considered the greatest loss of life at sea.

Though hardly known in the West, the Gustloff serves as a harbinger of our future under leftist “Joy.”
