Are We a Democracy or a Banana Republic? Time for Election Integrity, America

If we can’t trust our own election system, let’s stop pretending we’re any better than a banana republic. Here we are, the “land of the free,” yet states like California make it illegal to ask if a voter is even registered. Yes, you read that right—it’s actually against the law to confirm a person’s eligibility before they cast a ballot. Does that sound like the kind of election standard that should fly in a democracy? Spoiler: it doesn’t. And it’s time citizens demand a system overhaul before we end up a cautionary tale in a high school civics class.

Imagine this: you need an ID to buy cold medicine, board a plane, or enter any government building, but apparently, it’s outrageous to suggest we check ID for voting. Elections impact every single one of us, yet verifying identity is somehow off-limits? The logic is baffling. If you show up to vote claiming to be a citizen, why on earth would it be inappropriate to confirm that with a simple ID check? Is it really that controversial to ensure each vote belongs to an actual, eligible voter?

Opponents of voter ID laws argue it restricts access. Really? We’ve found ways to make IDs accessible for everything else—why not for voting? Almost every adult American has an ID, and if they don’t, providing one is not the herculean task it’s made out to be. The issue isn’t that voter ID is restrictive; it’s that the lack of it leaves the door wide open for abuse. A system this critical needs guardrails, not loopholes.

This isn’t a partisan issue—it’s a common-sense issue. Ensuring election integrity is about maintaining trust in the system, not stifling it. Without voter ID, the entire process is vulnerable. It’s simple: if you don’t check who’s voting, you can’t be sure the results are legitimate. And if you can’t trust the results, what are we even doing here? States that refuse to uphold basic standards like voter ID should face consequences. If a state won’t protect the integrity of its votes, its electoral votes should be nullified. Why should states that play by the rules have their elections diluted by those that don’t?

If we don’t demand election reform now, what’s left? When elections lack integrity, so does the government elected by them. Citizens deserve better than a system that plays fast and loose with something as important as their vote. It’s time to demand real election reform, insist on voter ID, and strip electoral influence from any state that won’t uphold basic standards. A genuine democracy deserves nothing less.
