During his visit to North Carolina President Trump had several disparaging things to say about FEMA. Apparently, there is an executive order to reorganize or “overhaul” the organization. He also hinted that the right answer is to disband the organization. THAT is the right answer. I thought job one for DOGE would be to disestablish FEMA and the Department of Indoctrination (a.k.a., Education).
One woman described the bureaucratic kabuki dance FEMA was putting people through in North Carolina and how no aid has reached many in need due to FEMA rules. During President Trump’s visit, it was reported that the Corps of Engineers is waiting on approval from FEMA (months after the disaster) before they can begin rebuilding roads and bridges, now rebuilding cannot begin for devastated communities until the roads are constructed, and how repairs have to be completed before affected North Carolinians can get aid. It was asserted that the only meaningful help for those communities has come from local charities like Samaritan’s Purse. Has anyone ever heard positive stories about FEMA?
The 10th Amendment of the Constitution is clear:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
I have firmly held for many years that most of what the federal government does is Unconstitutional because of the 10thAmendment.
Today President Trump was on exactly the right track. He said that we should let the States handle these crises and allocate resources locally. He asserted that his would be more effective than a federal response.
Nobel Prize winning economist Milton Friedman often said that government should be as local as possible so that the people can decide if they are getting their money’s worth.
All of that is preamble to say FEMA should be eliminated! When disasters occur, the federal government can allocate funds to send to the sovereign States to deal with the disaster more efficiently and effectively than the federal government. The role of the federal governrment is to provide resources. The States are better positioned to execute the response and use those resources effectively.
