Are the Democrats Failing Because They’re Too Old?

Jeet Heer has an article up at The Nation entitled “The Democrat Party Is Literally Dying.” I thought it was going to be another case of a liberal using the word “literally” wrong – so I read it to make fun of it.

The article started with:

In theory, the Democratic Party is a political organization aimed at gaining power and implementing an agenda. In practice, the Democrats more closely resemble a hospice, if not a funeral home. An inordinately large number of party leaders are so old and infirm they are at death’s door.

That’s when I realized that when Heer said “literally dying” he didn’t mean that the party is in big trouble because of infighting, ideological confusion, or a lack of an appealing message. He meant that the party leadership is approaching an actual reunion with their creator.

Mr. Heer continued:

On Wednesday, Democratic Representative Gerry Connolly—a lightning rod in the debates over his party’s gerontocracy when in December 2024 he defeated the much younger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to be the top Democrat in the House Oversight Committee—died of cancer at age 74. Connolly’s cancer had been made public last November. His victory over AOC—who is nearly four decades his junior, free of life-threatening diseases, and one of the most telegenic of elected officials in modern politics—was a dramatic illustration of how much the Democrats value seniority above all other considerations.

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez telegenic? Don’t you have to appeal to more people than gender confused communists burning Teslas for planetary salvation, to be considered telegenic?

Mr. Heer proceeded to point out that there have been 3 Democrat Congresscritters who have died in office since the election. He mourned that, had they relinquished their seats to the next generation, the reconciliation bill would have failed to pass. So, Heer isn’t concerned about the welfare of his comrades. Rather, he’s upset that their selfish refusal to shuffle off to the nearest nursing home in a timely fashion is jeopardizing the Democrat party’s “stop Donald Trump” resistance.

Mr. Heer then moved on to why the Dems have an “old coots dying” problem.

Democrats in particular have elevated seniority to a governing principle, meaning that party leadership is dominated by the aged.

Did you get that? The Democrat party has turned into a gerontocracy because they’re just so darned respectful of the elderly. I’ll give you a minute, … done laughing? Okay, I’ve got a few ideas of my own about why the Democrat party has turned into a communist assisted living collective.

Party Corruption

The Democrat party has devolved into little more than an organized crime family, with the best earners getting the leadership positions. Nan and Paul Pelosi are the best stock market speculators in history. Hillary Clinton is rather good at commodities trading herself. Bob Menendez had cash and gold bars stashed in his suit pockets and socks drawer. Joe Biden became a wealthy property owner with no visible income other than his government paycheck. In fact, the whole Biden family is wealthy without any known marketable attributes other than their last name.

An inordinate number of Democrats live a lifestyle which is unsustainable on a government salary or pension. Did you expect The Sopranos TV series to end with crime-boss Tony saying, “It’s time to pass the baton. I’m going to hand things over to Christopher, get out, downsize, and move into a modest apartment in the burbs.”? That’s not how criminals think. They don’t make decisions for the welfare of others. They stay in office to maintain their lifestyle, even while suffering from dementia, chronic stupidity, and terminal cancer.

Barack Obama Idolization

The last time the Democrat party decided to go the “telegenic candidate” route, it backed Barack Obama to sit behind the Resolute Desk. Even I must admit that he came across as appealing to a great many Americans. Self-promotion was his main core competency.

Obama drew huge crowds, made lofty claims, and got himself elected twice to the country’s highest office. But he did it at the expense of his party. He

  • Suffered one of the biggest midterm election losses in history;
  • Cost his party over a thousand elected positions at the local, state, and federal level; and
  • Paved the way for MAGA to sweep across America.

After Barack Obama, the party “bench” was cleared for a generation or more, and the Dems had to start developing leaders from the ground up.

There are few young party leaders left to take over for the likes of Mad Maxine Waters, because the Dems are still waiting for them to get out of diapers and run for office – perhaps after a short stint in the private sector as a bartender.

Abortion Worship

After Obama showed the bench warmers that their future was brighter in the private sector, there weren’t many kids left to start the long journey up the party hierarchy. There is a biological fact which the party of gender confusion would be wise to learn: Without birth, there can be no youth. A tribe that doesn’t procreate, ages itself into extinction.

Yet in the last two generations, the Democrat party has gone from “abortion must be safe, legal, and rare” to “abortion must be celebrated as a wise reproductive healthcare choice.”

Does Mr. Heer realize that every young lady wearing an “I had an abortion” tee-shirt, chose not to bring a future radical socialist into the world? There just aren’t that many little leftists growing up in the Democrat party anymore – by choice.

Joe Biden Normalization

After Donald Trump’s first administration, the Dems decided to ditch telegenic and give “normalcy” a try. They just failed to mention that corruption and incompetence is normal for Democrats.

Joe Biden not only pulled the curtain back on government corruption for the world to see, but he made a mockery of himself while he did it. He fell down stairs. He called people names. He wandered around aimlessly on stages. He even took orders from the Easter Bunny. After all of that, how many young people were saying, “I want to grow up to be like Joe.”? Joe Biden managed to make it uncool to be a Democrat.

Mr. Heer concludes that the Democrats have no guiding ideology or principles holding them together. Seriously? The Democrats maintain a rock-solid commitment to far more ideological issues than the Republicans do. They have a consensus that

  • Abortion is good,
  • America is bad,
  • Corruption should be protected,
  • Borders must be open, and
  • Civil unrest is a necessary precursor to socialism.

Finally, Mr. Heer states as fact: “The party is a heterogenous coalition of centrists and progressives that has failed to define a core goal.”

Um … no. The party is a heterogenous coalition of leftists and radicals who have stated their goal is to “resist” the will of the electorate to turn America into a communist utopia.

There’s a good reason that the approval of the Democrat party is at 27 percent (according to an NBC News poll) and falling, but Mr. Heer hasn’t found it. The Democrats aren’t failing because their leadership is old. The party leadership is old because the Democrats are failing.
