How We Got Here: Boomers Broke It and We’re Paying for It

Let’s get real: The Baby Boomer generation (1946-1964) inherited a booming post-war economy and then drove it into a ditch while patting themselves on the back. Here’s how:

• In 1971, Nixon axed the gold standard—because apparently, tying money to something real was just too old-fashioned for a government addicted to spending other people’s cash.
• Deregulation Mania: Boomers gutted financial safeguards like Glass-Steagall, letting Wall Street run wild. The result? The 2008 crash, which they barely noticed as their stock portfolios recovered while everyone else drowned.
• Globalization: Sell Out Main Street for Wall Street. Jobs were shipped to China and Mexico to juice shareholder profits. They bought cheaper goods while the middle class collapsed.
• Debt is the New American Dream. The Boomer era normalized credit card debt, national deficits, and student loans. Because “buy now, let someone else pay later” became the unofficial motto.
• Housing and Education Gold Rush: Boomers bought homes for peanuts and paid next to nothing for college. Then they watched as those costs skyrocketed, offering only “bootstraps” advice to younger generations.
• Endless Wars & Endless Waste: From Vietnam to Iraq to Afghanistan, trillions were spent on conflicts that accomplished nothing, all while bridges, schools, and healthcare crumbled.

Meanwhile, Boomers stacked their pensions, cashed their Social Security checks, and clutched their pearls whenever younger generations dared to point out the wreckage. They broke it, and now they’re sipping Chardonnay while Gen X and Z pick up the pieces
