Moment Charnière

The French have a term to depict, to designate, a hinge moment – a turning point in history: Moment Charnière. Some such decisive/earth-shattering incidents that come to mind: Bestowing the Ten Commandments, the birth of Jesus, and more recently the dropping of atomic bombs that decimated Japanese cities.

There are currently only nine nations (UK, France, Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Israel, USA and North Korea) that have destructive nuclear capability. The explosive and destructive power of those early blasts are significantly less than today’s nuclear bombs. Except for the USA’s WWII uses, none have used a nuke offensively or defensively – they just have them as a deterrent. One nation – Iran – has an active and professed goal to exterminate another people/country. There seems to be no question that if they were to acquire such a weapon, they’d use it.

Russia might end the war with Ukraine by detonating a nuke in a remote, unpopulated area of Ukraine. This would be a significant incentive for Ukraine, a non-NATO member, to surrender as Russia would be signaling their intention and willingness to obliterate all of Ukraine. The West’s response would determine if this was indeed, a Moment Charnière.
