Gavin Newsom decided to do something really original for a Democrat. He went on The Late Show with Steven Colbert and didn’t call President Trump a Nazi. Instead, he said that the Donald is an authoritarian, using ICE as his “private domestic army.” Okay, so he wasn’t that original.
Governor Hair-Gel must have been admiring himself in the mirror during his sixth-grade civics class, so I decided that a little remedial training on how our government works is in order.
We are a self-governed republic, in which our elected representatives pass laws consistent with our wishes. Our chief executive is duty bound to faithfully enforce those laws without bias or prejudice. So, when President Trump enforces immigration laws passed by the Congress, he isn’t being an authoritarian, he is being a loyal servant to the public.
Were our President an authoritarian, he might
- Refuse to enforce laws he doesn’t like — as Joe Biden did on immigration,
- Interpret laws in ways Congress didn’t intend — as Joe Biden had his prosecutors do against the January 6 protesters,
- Manipulate the media to hide malfeasance — as Joe Biden did by pressuring social media companies,
- Engage in misinformation to demonize political opponents — as Joe Biden did by incessantly repeating the “very fine people” hoax, and
- Use his pardon power to give “get out of jail free cards” to his friends and family — as Joe Biden did by the thousands.
A true dictator wannabe might even stand before a White House drenched in red lighting and declare half of the nation to be fascists — sorry, semi-fascists.
But somehow, I don’t recall Gavin Newsom tossing around the “authoritarian” moniker during President “Dementia’s” time in office. Could that be because he isn’t being principled, but instead opportunistic?
I almost have the sense that Governor Newsom is engaging in a bit of propaganda in hopes that the public with entrust him with the reins of power — so he can play authoritarian himself for a few years.
Joseph Robinette Biden showed us the danger of giving power to unprincipled grifters. I pray we have learned our lesson.
