Part III — The Empire That Thought It Was Different (2001–2021)
Fast-forward another century, and the players have changed — but the mountains haven’t. After 9/11, the United States and its NATO allies, including Britain, marched into Afghanistan to root out the Taliban and rebuild the nation. The mission began with resolve and technology the old empires could only dream of: drones, satellites, laser-guided everything.
But the result was eerily familiar. Twenty years later, the Taliban rode back into Kabul in Toyota pickups as American helicopters lifted off embassy rooftops. Britain once again followed America out — just as it had marched in.
Three empires. Three defeats. Same mountains. Same outcome.
Afghanistan isn’t just another country. It’s a mirror — one that shows great powers their limits. The Persians, the Greeks, the Mongols, the British, the Soviets, and now the West have all walked in thinking they were exceptions to history.
But history has a short message for every would-be conqueror who sets foot in those hills:
“Welcome to the Graveyard of Empires. Leave your pride at the door.”
Maybe, finally, we’ve learned our lesson. Some mountains aren’t meant to be tamed — only respected.
