Part III — The United States of Satan: How a Nation of “Freedom” Became LaVey’s Largest Disciple
Here’s the irony: America never had to build a Church of Satan. It simply turned the entire culture into one. LaVey’s gospel of the self, wrapped in indulgence and spectacle, is now our civic creed. We chant it at campaign rallies, shop it online, and watch it in prime-time. No membership cards required.
Look at politics. Every candidate promises “service” but campaigns on self. “You deserve this,” “follow your truth,” “make America great for you.” Candidates are brands, voters are consumers, and elections are marketing campaigns for indulgence. That’s LaVey’s playbook in action: politics as ego theater.
Look at culture. His rule of cruelty — treat irritants without mercy — is the blood sport of social media, cable news, and political debate. We don’t argue opponents; we destroy them. Cruelty is no longer a vice; it’s a virtue. That’s not democratic discourse. That’s LaVeyan liturgy, livestreamed.
Look at morality. When life is reduced to utility and appetite, law follows. Babies are disposable, the elderly negotiable, and assisted suicide framed as choice. Convenience becomes commandment. Add in consumerism — buy now, debt tomorrow — and you’ve institutionalized indulgence as national economy. Credit cards function like indulgences, malls as cathedrals, advertising as homilies.
And look at worship. We claim “Judeo-Christian” roots, but the pews are empty while stadiums and shopping centers overflow on Sundays. Billions pour into self-help, body worship, body modification and celebrity cults. Sunday mornings belong to the NFL and Amazon. The true creed is simple: me first, me last, me only.
America didn’t outlaw LaVey’s philosophy — it mainstreamed it. Without any government decree, we installed indulgence, cruelty, and nihilism as cultural commandments. We boast of rejecting Satan, but we’ve become his most successful missionary field. The United States of Satan doesn’t need a cathedral. It already has one. It’s called America, and it’s open 24/7.
