Doomsday, the end of life as we know it, was set at 7-minutes before midnight by a few scientists in 1947. Originally, these experts were only concerned with nuclear mutual-assured-destruction. Now, the dire prediction includes consequences of climate change, disruptive technologies and biological perils. Upon Trump’s 2024 election they decreased the time from 90 to 89-seconds to midnight. Are they Democrats – believing he was a greater threat to humanity’s existence?
The clock-setters criteria does not consider the compilation factor – a slow piling up of non-nuclear hazards resulting in one unforeseeable moment – an instant that is irreversibly terminal for humans, e.g., the accumulation of pollutants from an over-populated world to suddenly overwhelm, amass and collate to become so toxic that it kills off humanity before it can react. In other words, the teetering balance of the food chain’s dependency on clean water and air, tips, rips, crashes past the tipping point.
Beyond this point-of-no-return, unleashing nuclear weapons might obliterate your enemy, but it would not prolong the attacker’s longevity. If the new clock setting (scheduled for 27 Jan 2026) increases the time – are clock-setters Republicans who believe Trump is making the planet safer? Everything is political.
