Virginia: Ten Reasons to Vote “No!” to Partisan Political Re-Districting

In 2020 Virginians voted to take re-districting away from politicians.  We, The People, voted overwhelmingly for a non-partisan commission to fairly draw our electoral districts.  Now that Democrats are in power, they want to change the rules and trash the Virginia Constitution.  Here are ten reasons to reject their shady scheme.

  1. Unconstitutional. The Democrats violated Virginia law which requires an “intervening election” between the first and second vote to put a Constitutional amendment before The People. Democrats claim the election of 2025 – when voting began before the General Assembly’s first vote  – was an intervening election.  2025 was, in fact, an ongoing election.  The April vote for this amendment will be challenged in court.
  2. You Get No Voice, No Vote. Virginia’s U.S. House of Representatives seats as Democrat-6: Republican-5 reflect the state’s split between Democrats and Republicans.  If districts are drawn to give a 10:1 Democrat advantage, then almost half of Virginia’s voters have no voice in Congress.  Your voice is lost.
  3. You Settled the Issue in 2020. Virginia voted overwhelmingly in 2020 to take redistricting out of the hands of politicians and have a non-partisan commission draw districts. You fixed it as an amendment to our Virginia Constitution.  Gov. Spannberger enthusiastically supported it back in 2019.  What changed to justify altering the Constitution since the 2020 vote?  What’s wrong with keeping redistricting with the commission?
  4. Don’t Copy Other States. Virginia shouldn’t get “Gerrymander fever” because other states are stupidly partisan. Virginia should lead, as it once did, not follow.  Virginia is the only state in the Union to have a one-term governor because our governor has too much power to trust to ANYONE for two or more terms.  Likewise, the power to re-district is proven to be too much temptation for elected officials to resist.  It’s folly to follow other states blindly.
  5. Don’t Trifle with Our Constitution. The Amendment specifies redistricting “shall be limited to making such modifications between January 1, 2025 and October 31, 2030, in response to actions taken by another state between January 1, 2025, and October 31, 2030.” Why does Virginia’s Constitution need a temporary fix?  Constitutions aren’t supposed to be trashed with short-term special cases – especially when they refer to “another state”.
  6. Unfair. “Fair play” is a tenet of the American Creed – the basic ideas which define Americans. The redistricting amendment is patently unfair. Unjust.  Unequal.  It’s wrong for a slim majority to rob a very large minority of their just representation.
  7. Don’t Massachusetts Our Virginia. Unfair redistricting, Gerrymandering, was invented in Massachusetts over 200 years ago. Today, 4 out of 10 voters in Massachusetts vote Republican.  Yet, there’s not a single Republican in the House from Massachusetts.  The same shenanigans rob California voters.  Democrats will “Trans” Virginia into East California or Southern Taxachusetts  if this amendment passes.
  8. No to Voter Suppression. When your vote can’t count because of Gerrymandered districts, your vote is suppressed. Voter suppression by Democrats in Virginia is their legacy from Jim Crow racial segregation.  Voter suppression is past it’s expiration date in Virginia.  Vote to keep it so.
  9. No to Partisanship in Our Constitution. The Virginia Constitution is for all Virginians. It’s about our citizenship.  Our Commonwealth.  The words – Democrat and Republican – aren’t in our Constitution.  Redistricting Virginia to make it 10:1 Democrat is blatantly partisan politics.
  10. No to the Lie. Redistricting a 52:48 Democrat:Republican voting majority (at best) into 10:1 Democrat:Republican Congressional Representatives makes any pretense of representation an obvious lie. Our Virginia Constitution shouldn’t be twisted to accommodate falsehood.

The Virginia Constitution begins with “A DECLARATION OF RIGHTS made by the good people of Virginia in the exercise of their sovereign powers, which rights do pertain to them and their posterity, as the basis and foundation of government.”  You are the good people of Virginia.

Furthermore, “That all power is vested in, and consequently derived from, the people, that magistrates are their trustees and servants, and at all times amenable to them.”

You, the Virginia citizen,  are the Sovereign of Virginia.  Don’t let politicians from one party trash your Constitution.  Vote No on the Redistricting Amendment.  Politicians are supposed to be your servants, not your masters.
