Memorial Day. We honor those who have made us what we are. As Abraham Lincoln described them, those “who gave the last full measure of devotion.”
Our journey began with the Revolution. Economic issues may have underlined it but freedom, liberty and self determination were the things those initial patriots gave their lives for. That is underscored by George Washington when he said, “Remember officers and soldiers that you are free men fighting for the blessings of liberty.”
As we look at those white crosses on lush green lawns we honor those men and women who lie beneath. But there are those not covered by that lawn. Since WWII, 80,000 soldiers are designated as Missing In Action. They are unseen but cannot be forgotten.
And there are others who we might overlook. Those who become part of the 22 per day—the number of veterans who take their own lives. These American sons and daughters should inspire us to honor their sacrifice and commit to those lost not only on the physical battlefield but also on that battlefield none of us can see.
Sadly, there is a negative issue that casts a slur on this solemn day—stolen valor. “First it dishonors the legacy of those who’ve made sacrifices in service to their country. Second, it undermines public trust in military institutions….and casts doubt on the authenticity of real veterans’ stories. Lastly, it impacts the value and meaning of military decorations.” (UCMJ) Therefore, do not stand for those whose ego would dishonor those who did.
Three books ask, “When young men and women go to war, what are we asking of them? When they return what are we asking them for?” Questions that everyone should ask. E. B. Sledge, With The Old Breed. Women In War, compiled by David A. Yuzuk. Thank You For Your Service by David Finkel. They will remind you of the debt we owe.
And remember this, “It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died, rather we should thank God that those men lived.” (General George Patton) To that I can only say, Amen.
