How does someone equipped with God-given wisdom and unparalleled wealth end up wasting their legacy? In this revealing session of Dr. John Barnett’s Proverbs masterclass, we uncover the exact root of King Solomon’s downfall. The ruin of his life didn’t happen overnight; it began with a single, massive failure to prioritize God’s Word over earthly power.
Here is what you will discover in this compelling lesson:
1. The 900-Hour Challenge: The Forgotten Command
Scripture References: Deuteronomy 17:18
Summary: God gave a very specific rule for anyone who would sit on the throne of Israel: before doing anything else, the king was commanded to personally hand-copy the entire Law (the Pentateuch). Dr. Barnett explains the sheer scale of this task—copying roughly 192 pages, 5,852 verses, and 160,000 words. For a skilled scribe, this would take 900 hours, or six solid months of eight-hour workdays. God designed this massive, time-consuming project to ensure the king’s heart was saturated with Scripture before ruling, but Solomon seemingly viewed it as too much work and too inconvenient.
2. Multiplying Destruction: Horses, Wives, and Gold
Scripture References: Deuteronomy 17:16-17; 1 Kings
Summary: Because Solomon neglected to write out his own copy of the Bible, he failed to heed God’s direct warnings to kings. The Law explicitly commanded the king not to multiply horses, wives, or silver and gold. Because he didn’t have God’s Word guiding his daily decisions, Solomon blatantly disobeyed all three—amassing chariot cities filled with horses, taking 1,000 wives, and hoarding so much silver that it became as common as stones on the ground.
3. The Inconvenience of Obedience: David vs. Solomon
Scripture References: Deuteronomy 17:14-17
Summary: When we look at Solomon’s life, we see a man who prioritized immediate, earthly success—building his mansions, armies, and wealth—over the seemingly inconvenient discipline of internalizing the Bible. You will see a tragic contrast between Solomon and his father, David. While David constantly sang, quoted, and wrote songs about the Scriptures, Solomon neglected it, leading to the exact pitfalls and distractions that God warned would limit his usefulness and ruin his life.
