A succinct definition of Common Sense seems difficult to state. The issue might be semantics. Even CoPilot AI struggles: “The shared, experience-based judgment people rely on to handle ordinary situations without needing specialized knowledge.” Merriam-Webster isn’t much better: “Sound and prudent judgement based on a simple perception of the situation or facts”. Now, with each word’s meaning defined, I’ll give it a try:
Common Sense: To Hold the Belief of Traditional, Reasonable and Rational Logic of a defined subject.
Common: Ordinary, widespread, general.
Sense: Core feelings, a firm intuitive acceptance.
Traditional: Historically acceptable.
Reasonable: Not extreme or excessive, the space between unmitigated hatred and unquestioning faith.
Rational: Believing the results of such a belief is better than the alternative.
Logic: Pragmatism in real-world situations.
Common Sense Examples: Not allowing boys to compete in girls sports. Controlled immigration. Requiring citizenship-based voter ID.
Lack of Common Sense Examples: Political candidates touting motivation-void socialism over incentive-driven capitalism. The State of NY recently passed legislation changing mother to gestating-parent and father to non-gestating-parent. Would these Common-Sense challenged New Yorkers change the Biblical word G-d to Predominant-Seeming-Spirit or Moses to Alleged-Commandment-Recipient? I’m sure some of them would like to change LEO to enemy-of-the-state.
