Western Civilization: Quo Vadis?
All of Western Civilization should celebrate Columbus Day. No exceptions. Especially for Indians.
Especially, because the “Columbian Exchange” between Europe and the New World went well for Indigenous people of the Americas and Caribbean.
Europe got potatoes, tomatoes, corn, cacao, tobacco and syphilis.
The Indians got European diseases, every advancement above their Stone Age, and the multitudinous gains of Western Civilization – with Christianity above all.
A more important reason for all of Western Civilization to celebrate is how Columbus’s discovery jump-started the incredible advancement of Western Civilization since 1500. In the previous 500 years, Europe made progress from its third place position behind Islam and China in the Year 1000 AD. 1492 AD became the green light for the West.
William H. McNeill’s “The Pursuit of Power: Technology, armed force, and society since A.D. 1000” is a master class in how history happens – explaining the explosive rise of how backward Europe became the greatest Civilization in the history of humanity – our Western Civilization.
McNeill pulls in all the multi-disciplinary aspects of societies that support cultures with specific worldviews to grow from tiny tribes to great civilizations. Demographics, geography, technology, economics, religion, the environment, governments, wars, as well as Great Men and Women, work simultaneously to make history happen.
Since “Culture Commands” so much of our understanding and behavior, the ideas within the culture count greatly. All because ideas motivate humankind. Ideas motivate humans to do things great and terrible.
And, the better ideas within Western Civilization proved triumphant.
Ideas motivated the successes of market economics, the nation-state, the Rule of Law, literacy, individualism, etc.
Ideas drove advancement through the Renaissance (which began in the 1300s), Reformation, Enlightenment, Industrial Revolution, and – for the Anglosphere – 3 Great Awakenings.
Christian ideas motivated Europeans the most.
The same year Columbus discovered the New World and claimed it for Crown and Christ, his Spanish Sovereigns completed the 800 year Reconquista to drive the Muslim invaders from the Iberian Peninsula.
Successive Christian European victories from 1492 to the last Muslim military invasion in 1683 kept Islam out of Europe. Eventually, every Islamic power collapsed and came under European rule until the end of Colonialism after WW II.
Then, Europeans committed industrialized mass murder upon themselves in the senseless slaughter of World War I.
World War I destroyed European confidence in itself. Tragically, Europeans started their walk away from Christianity and their embrace of state socialism. World War II and its horrors sped up both bad trends. The shock of the most advanced European country – Germany – committing genocide was too much.
Concurrently, the awful ideas of the French Revolution evolved through their bloody evolutions as National Socialism, Fascism, and Communism.
The Socialist ideas survived the fall of the Soviet Empire and govern the welfare states across Western Civilization.
In the most remarkable twist and turn around in history, the Ruling Elites in Europe invite “migrants” from other civilizations to replace their populations. Unbelievably, after fighting Muslim invaders since 711 AD, Europeans accommodate the Muslim migration, population explosion, and conquest of Europe.
The failures of Rome in the West in the 400s and the fall of Rome in the East when Constantinople was conquered by Muslims in 1453, don’t compare to what is happening in Europe – first – followed by the rest of Western Civilization.
Consequently, this Columbus Day 2026 – Western Civilization is in a survival crisis of its own deliberate doing.
Islam is an identity, culture, and civilization which is at least 800 years behind Western Civilization. It’s barbaric and savage as witnessed recently by the Hamas Muslim massacre against Israelis on October 7th, 2023. Islam as a backward religion doesn’t rise to the level to be recognized as a religion in Western Civilization. It’s more like the Aztecs in the 1500s.
Islam is the inherent, implacable, incorrigible enemy of Western Civilization. Islam can’t co-habitate in Western Civilization – which it calls the World of War “Dar al-Harb”.
Western Civilization won’t survive without Christianity.
Christianity is a still ascending faith built on ideas that enrich, ennoble, and elevate humankind.
This Columbus Day, let’s celebrate Western Civilization and to keep Western Civ alive and advancing make the Remigration of Islam or, the ReConquista if necessary, happen.
Sooner is better.
