Recent riots and looting in Paris, France made a young White woman the face of suicidal empathy for Western Civilization. The viral video of her telling the looters to stop stealing from her shop because that was not the “cause” and she voted for migrants, was on their side, etc. made her quizzical countenance the poster child for suicidal self-delusion about Islam and the 3rd World in the West. Yet, true to true believer form, reportedly, she was still loyal to the looters’ cause days after her shop was destroyed.
She might be a true believer in French “Islamo-Gauchisme” indeed. In America, it’s called the Red-Green Alliance. That’s the Bolsheviks, or whatever the Left’s self-identity de jour is, and Muslims in the U.S.
The lengths to which the human mind can delude itself, deny reality, cling to blatant, obvious falsehoods, and to so unto death is astonishing. Astonishingly consistent throughout human history. Amazingly powerful and tragic in its consequences.
I’ve been intrigued by the concept of a true believer since I was a young man. One of the books I read instead of studying for my classes at West Point was Eric Hoffer’s “The True Believer”. That book moved my mind.
First, I was interested in the notion of a longshoreman, working man philosopher. Supposedly, he would think of a single statement while doing his manual labor all day. Go home and write it. Then work it in his mind over and over until he could add another and another. Build a paragraph. Fully complete a thought.
Since I live in my head – and that shouldn’t require an explanation – constantly thinking, wondering, computing, composing, evaluating, comparing, creating, I read his book, “The True Believer”.
If I ever get through the great stack of my “to do” reading, I’ll read it again.
His claim that the most fervent Anti-Communist is a former Communist while the most fervent Atheist is a former Christian stuck with me.
Hoffer illustrated the emotional, psychological strength it takes to overcome personal, familial, and social barriers in changing one’s ideology. In changing one’s personal identity.
So, how do you change the mind of a True Believer?
Basically, you don’t. It can be done, but it’s not done often or easily.
However, behavior can be changed regardless of what one believes. It’s called coercion and submission. It works on behavior.
Changing one’s worldview and attendant ideology can happen when the world which shaped the worldview is utterly destroyed.
T.R Fehrenbach and others described it when the Plains Indians, like the Commanches, had their entire world destroyed in one generation’s lifespan.
Or, worldview can change when these factors, or lines of change, combine to move individual humans to reject their former worldview and accept a different worldview:
- Ideas resonating
- Messages and Media communicating
- Communities supporting
- Key Persons championing
- Status of women bettering
- Family strengthening
- Elites, even a few, exhibiting
- Education superior and rewarding
- Incentives offering
- Power to force complying
Combinations of those ten factors moved Europe from Pagan to Christian. It took 1,000 years. Likewise, those factors moved over half of Europe to go from Roman Catholic to Protestant before substantial Protestant lands were conquered.
The True Believers of the Left likely will see their world in the West collapse into civil war before they can be convinced of better ideas.
Even more so, the True Believers of Islam won’t change with an exchange of ideas because Islam is an culture, identity, and backward religion underneath an overarching totalitarian ideology. All the parts are called Islam. All reinforce one another.
Muslims in the West must be defeated as utterly and completely as the Comanches were. And for the same reason that tribal Islam can’t co-exist with Western Civilization any more than tribal Comanches could.
Remigrate and contain Muslims in the lands already conquered by Islam and let them fester there until Islam collapses on itself like Soviet Communism did.
Help dump the beliefs of the Red-Green True Believers on the ash heap of history.
