The comments above are quite typical of American liberals in the aftermath of Justin “Castro” Trudeau’s authoritarian actions to shut down the freedom convoy in Canada. Despite the left-wing myth of the last 50 years that Democrats are the party of freedom and tolerance, their response to any dissent gives the lie to that story. In case after case, they show their true colors, and those colors are decidedly dictatorial. As alarmingly, they have increasingly been turning their power on average citizens and counting on the massive power of the Federal government to coerce and intimidate large swaths of the American population into submissive obedience. Unfortunately, the GOP has done little to oppose these illegal and Unconstitutional actions. Giving speeches on the floor of the Capitol does not count as opposition. They are photo ops and nothing more. As left-wing media and Democrat politicians applaud the acts of the would-be dictator to the north, you can bet they are anticipating how they might implement similar policies in this country. Americans who value the own freedom are well advised to support the Canadian truckers in any way they can. If American truckers engage in a similar protest, every conservative American should rally behind them. It is not clear that if that will happen. One thing is certain, liberals in this country will be cheering for the government.
It did not used to be that way. Liberals used to be the party that worried the most about government power and abuse of its authority. Liberals, black and white, proudly proclaimed the fact that they led the civil rights movement. They fought for women’s rights. They championed lowering the voting age to 18. They fought for homosexual rights, abortion rights and rights for illegal aliens. Tellingly, in all those cases the oppressor was… the government! Liberals were fighting against government power. Now everything has changed. Instead of fighting government, liberals are hoping that the government will crush their enemies! Who are their enemies? Any American citizen who does not agree with them.
Many will try to deny that is the case, but the record speaks for itself. Liberals are the ones calling for white people to be denied health care even if their lives are in danger solely because they are white. Liberals are the ones calling for unvaccinated people to be denied health care as well. That stance is particularly revealing since unvaccinated people are more likely to be non-white than the general population. Liberals were the ones who sided with pedophiles against a 17-year-old boy trying to defend himself and cheered on a corrupt prosecutor attempting to railroad him. Plainly, disagreeing with liberals on policy trumps EVERYTHING else, including race. “Red and yellow, black and white, you are dog meat if you fight. Libfools hate the unwashed masses of the world”, with apologies to my Sunday school teachers.
How did it come this? How did a party that made its reputation as a champion of the downtrodden suddenly become a fawning acolyte of government power? As mentioned earlier, that myth is only 50 years old. Prior to the 1970s, the Democrat party was the party of the power structure. It backed unions, Jim Crow Southerners, big city patronage machines like Richard Daly’s in Chicago, and was a powerhouse in local politics all over the country. Democrats like LBJ openly bragged about how they could rig elections, and everyone knew that Democrat leaders in some locales were de facto dictators. Bull Connor in Alabama had nothing on Tammany Hall. The Democrats’ fatal sin, and it was big one, was they refused to allow black people a seat at the table, most violently and egregiously in the south, but just as permanently in the north. When the Jim Crow excesses of men like George Wallace finally offended enough Democrats, the resulting schism within that party changed everything. Never ones to let a crisis go to waste, liberal Democrats dumped the now discredited southern racists, or recast them as quiet heroes for the poor and working man, like Robert Byrd. At the same time, they also portrayed government as a good guy in the fable as well. It was not government thugs who enforced Jim Crow, it was the KKK. It was not Richard Daly and his machine who disenfranchised black Chicagoans, it was racist white voters. The federal government did not support separate but equal, including segregating the armed forces, and letting Jim Crow be enforced by the Plessy Ferguson ruling of the Supreme Court, it was white people!! To put a finer point on it, it was white males!
As a marketing campaign, it was rather ingenious. You are a political party in a country that is 80% white. You alienate and make mortal enemies of 20% of that base population by attacking them over Jim Crow. You have no chance with the 10% of the population that is black if they identify you as the party of Jim Crow. That spells trouble. However, your young radical base has inspired 25-30% of the white population by being courageous in pursuit of justice. That has also proven to be very attractive to other minority populations on the surface, but they don’t trust the transformation. After all, it was just a few short years prior that Democrats were leading the charge on segregation!
The answer? Massive welfare programs to prove the Democrat party’s good faith. That locked in the 25% of true liberal whites, almost 100% of blacks, and most minorities whose suspicions might have still lingered, but who were in no position to turn down free cash if it was offered. Shamed by the excesses of Democrat politicians and their own acquiescence, the GOP leadership could not find the courage to stand in the way of the great socialist welfare state the Democrats proposed. LBJ, a dyed in wool racist and totally corrupt politician, best summarized the cynical and evil genius of the strategy with his infamous and disgusting quote concerning the passage of the Great Society legislation: “I’ll have those n*****s voting Democrat for 200 years.” If anyone had predicted in 1960 that blacks would vote Democrat, they would have been considered a total idiot or an ignoramus. Black Americans understandably hated the Democrat party. Thus, the new Democrat party was born out of the summers of Mississippi burning and the Great Society. It was an alliance of necessity and convenience. It also created a lasting Democrat base: the 10% of black Americans; the 25% of white Americans who embraced liberalism; and most non-white Americans. That gave Democrats a 45% safe base in the national elections that might not always vote, but if it did, it always voted Democrat.
The problem with that Democrat alliance was that the only glue that held it together was government money. Fifty years later, that is still true. Unfortunately for the Democrats, the money is running out. The Democrat leadership knows that is true, so they are doing the damnedest to centralize power as much as they can before that happens. They used the pandemic to take a giant leap forward on that score. Never in history has an American government been so intrusive in all Americans’ lives. It would have been inconceivable to Americans who fought Hitler and Tojo that their descendants would be ordered not to attend church, but casinos and liquor stores would be open for business.
Predictably, Americans have begun pushing back and resisting, but unpredictably, the Canadian truckers acted even more boldly. Their Freedom Convoy is truly inspirational to anyone who values individual freedom and fears unfettered government power. On the other hand, it is the worst nightmare of the leaders of the Democrat party. If the Canadian truckers succeed, you can bet that working people in this country will follow suit. THAT, dear readers, is why American liberals hate the Canadian truckers and cheer for Justin Trudeau even as he wields dictatorial power and promises to take the freedom of average Canadians without due process or legislative action. One hopes that most Americans see what is happening in Canada and find the actions of the left wing in that country repulsive. If not, America will take another big step toward the eventual demise of this Republic.

As left-wing Americans cheer the Trudeau government for crushing working Canadians who just want their freedom back, one cannot help feeling a shiver of fear for the future of this country when Democrats are enamored by a would-be dictator. Turn in your Castro shirts liberals and get your Trudeau T-shirts instead. Sadly, a new saying has become too true “Scratch a liberal, find a fascist.”
