Leadership Series: The Ride of the Spineless, Part III

Part III: The Global Collapse of Courage — and Why It’s Killing Us

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:

Most modern leaders aren’t chosen for competence.

They’re chosen because they don’t scare anyone above them.

That’s it.

That’s the algorithm.

You don’t rise by being bold.

You rise by being harmless.

You rise by:

• smiling in meetings,

• never criticizing the dumb ideas,

• pretending the spreadsheets make sense,

• and letting the incompetent stay comfortable.

This is why large institutions behave like emotionally fragile cults.

They’re terrified of accountability.

Psychologists call this ego threat avoidance.

Sociologists call it bureaucratic inertia.

Anthropologists call it cultural cowardice.

Cedar Savage calls it:

“Leadership by people who would drown in a puddle if you took away their ergonomic desk chair.”

And here’s the kicker:

Systems follow their leaders.

When leaders are afraid:

• organizations stagnate,

• innovation dies,

• morale collapses,

• courage evaporates,

• and the entire culture becomes scared of its own shadow.

Internationally, this rot is everywhere:

• European ministers terrified of upsetting committees.

• NATO leaders needing three international working groups to pick the color of a stapler.

• Corporate CEOs who panic if Twitter gets mad.

• Pentagon officials replacing “winning wars” with “optimizing stakeholder outcomes.”

We’ve built a world where not failing is more important than succeeding,

and where not offending anyone is more valued than fixing anything.

The result?

A leadership class that specializes in:

• hiding,

• delaying,

• hedging,

• blaming,

• and avoiding.

And that’s why everything feels like it’s run by committee ghosts instead of actual humans.

Until institutions decide to reward courage instead of punishing imperfection, we’ll keep getting leaders who need 27 meetings to schedule a meeting.
