Part I: The Age of Coward Leaders — How We Got Here
Remember when leaders actually led?
When decisions were made by people with chests instead of committees with spreadsheets?
Those were the days — before leadership got replaced with laminated “values posters,” HR-approved courage, and CEOs who sweat through their shirts when someone asks a real question.
Today, we have a leadership class built like wet cardboard.
And the data actually backs this up.
Harvard Business Review found that senior leaders spend 72% of their time “risk-managing decisions” — not making decisions.
Translation:
They sit in meetings trying to avoid getting blamed for anything.
MIT Sloan found that large organizations penalize failed experiments 4 to 10 times harsher than successful ones are rewarded.
This creates what behavioral economists call catastrophic risk aversion — and what the rest of us call cowardice in bulk packaging.
Modern leadership is simple:
• Never stick your neck out.
• Never contradict mediocrity.
• Never risk failure.
• And absolutely never tell the truth if it could get awkward.
We don’t select for courage anymore.
We select for conformity, compliance, and corpse-like emotional neutrality.
Part I sets the table.
Now let’s carve the turkey.
