Homeschooling: The Importance

Homeschooling is vital to the continuation of our Republic.  I truly believe that.  There will be some kids who come out of public and private schools miraculously unscathed by the anti-American propaganda being shoved down their throats and there will be some homeschoolers who buy the lies hook, line and sinker – but both will be the exception, not the rule.

It is homeschoolers who are still learning American history and who still have pride in our Founding Fathers and this great nation.  They are rare among their generation.  Most homeschoolers can tell you, not only that communism and socialism are bad, but why they are bad.  They have been taught nuances that go unexplained in public schools – that great men are not perfect and their successes can still be celebrated without honoring their poor choices.

Homeschool kids tend to understand the importance of family as the foundation of society.  Most respect their parents and the traditional morals they were raised under.  They tend to be hard-working and business-minded.  They were all raised by parents who, at the very least, were wary of the government and, therefore, tend not to believe that government is the solution to all of life’s troubles.

In a word, most homeschoolers tend to be Conservatives.

One recent example of the conservative bent of homeschoolers is the recent Coronavirus hysteria.  The only people I personally know who were arguing about mandatory mask requirements with store employees were homeschool parents.  In fact, someone asked me where all the rebellious young people were, instead the people rebelling were homeschool moms – those wild things!  Further, the Covid vaccine is far from the first vaccine most homeschoolers have refused to take.  Homeschool parents are old hands at fighting against authority to raise their kids and live their lives the way they want to.  They have already gone head-to-head with doctors, schools, government officials, and their own family members who all thought they were crazy in order to pursue the life they want to live.

It isn’t easy for a young mother to be berated by a highly educated doctor and yet to stand her ground.  I don’t care if the issue is vaccines or a medical procedure she doesn’t want for her child, that sort of experience strengthens a parent.  It also reminds a doctor that a child’s medical decisions are decided by the parent not him – a worthwhile purpose in and of itself.  Further, when your convictions are tested, as many homeschool parents have already endured, you have to make sure you really believe them and are committed to them.  The homeschool community has been doing that for far longer than opponents of Coronavirus mandates have and we need their experience.

Many years ago, when I was just beginning to homeschool my eldest, probably around 2012, I met a sweet older lady.  When she found out that I was homeschooling she looked at me the way people do when they are thanking veterans for their service and she said, so sincerely, “Thank you for homeschooling your kids.  It will be the homeschoolers who save this nation.”  I have never forgotten that.  Those difficult days when the kids don’t want to learn or I’m exhausted from all the things I do and wonder why on earth I don’t drop them off and let the public schools educate them, I remember that woman’s words.

What I am doing, as insignificant as it may seem to some, is making a difference.  Whether we can return this country to the Constitution or only save a remnant, it is an important work.

This is the first of five articles I am writing this week that focus on homeschooling.  Come back tomorrow to read more on how liberals see homeschooling as a threat.

  1. There’s not a thing in the world insignificant about a parent homeschooling their child. when the government, or a political party chooses to attack one who gives that much. They have to use every trick in the “Journ-o-list” book to make home schoolers pariahs.

We know better, and they are losing their hissy fits. God bless the parent who goes that extra mile.
