As we celebrate our independence from England, ask yourself: What are you prepared to do to keep liberty alive?
Today is the last day of the 3-day weekend celebrating the birth of as President Abraham Lincoln put it, “the last best hope of earth,” these United States of America. We are fortunate this year, in that the actual date falls on a day with another day off immediately following. Most Federal holidays are celebrated on a Monday, regardless of the actual date, which might actually fall mid-week. This year the 4th is on a Sunday, which allows us in and amongst the barbeques and fireworks, to reflect on just what a huge thing the Declaration of Independence was, not only by today’s standards, but even more so at the time it was written.
Later today one of our great writers, Mike Thiac, will publish a great piece on the Declaration. I urge you to have a look at it. Take the time to read the entire document. The Declaration of Independence has been called a number of things from, “The Greatest Breakup Letter ever,” to “One of the most detailed indictments of sovereign malfeasance towards a people.” The indictment part is also referred to by another of our stellar Writers, Tom Weaver, where he replaces King George, with “King” Biden. But that’s not the only parallel of note.
What seems to be lost today, or perhaps a better term would be, “buried,” comes as a simple question: “What would it take for any of us to do what the Founders did?” In the leftist haste to decry them all as a “bunch of old, white, men,” we have not only lost sight of the environment they lived in, but also are promoting a falsehood. We can easily stipulate to two out of the three, (mostly) “white” and (mostly) “men.” Old? Mostly—Not. Let’s have a look. On July 4th, 1776 these men listed below are just a representative sample of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. Here are their names and respective ages:
John Hancock, 39
Thomas Jefferson, 33
Gouveneur Morris, 24
John Adams, 40
Alexander Hamilton, 21
James Madison, 25
Edward Rutledge, 26
Robert Treat Paine, 45
Also of note, George Washington, who would have been one of the first to be hanged for treason had we failed, was 44. Nathan Hale, hanged by the British as a spy, was only 21. The singular exception to this is of course, the sprightly Benjamin Franklin, who was 70 at the time. You can see a very interesting list of significant actors on both sides of the American Revolution, along with their respective ages here.
But that is only one minor aspect of this discussion. Here is the most important thought for this celebration; Ask yourself this my fellow Americans: What would it take for you to take up arms against the lawful government of these United States? As is pointed out, early and often by the left, these men were for the most part, men of means. What is ignored, is what that means. These great men were fairly well-to-do property owners who had a lot to lose. As mentioned by a stalwart supporter of this site, the Founders not only had a lot to lose, but actually might have been better off financially and socially by maintaining “the status quo.” All of them were noted members of their communities and many had served The Crown valiantly in past conflicts.
These brave men pictured at the head of this column did just that, pledging “to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” Many of them paid just that by becoming destitute, dying in prison or having family members die there. What would it take for you (forget about taking up arms) to publicly and vocally oppose the entrenched bureaucracy and politically corrupt members of the government, media and Big Tech? What sacrifices are you willing to make?
Are you willing to endure the inconvenience of shopping locally instead of sending your money to China, a country who by negligence or design, loosed a disease that shut down our economy? Are you willing to lose a few friends in order to stand up for what is right? Interestingly, the supporter I mentioned above, pointed out that although not at the same level or risk as the Founders (except for malicious criminal prosecution and legal harassment) the situation was somewhat “paralleled by Donald Trump over two centuries later.”
Food for thought as we close out this 4th of July Weekend. What are you prepared to do?
