Old Glory

Old Glory.

“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

Remember? When I was in school we recited it daily. We had our flag in front of the room. We also had a prayer to start our day, which was to hopefully make us better students and to absorb the knowledge our teachers provided. Was doing that so bad? But those were the old days.

What’s been happening under our noses? Have we been brought to a state of “disunity”? How can the States, the Feds, and unelected bureaucrats work for the common good without having common goals? I know, “good” is a relative term. But shouldn’t we be able to define how that word applies to our country? Shouldn’t we continue moving forward toward a greater good, acknowledging our past transgressions while building on those wrongs to bring about a better future? Secure the blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity? Obviously, I didn’t write that. Men much more enlightened than I did.

But the country is divided and I’ve seen it divided before. Blame it on whoever but maybe we should stop blaming and start looking for good. Rather than your feet hitting the floor in the morning and emotionally railing about something wrong, look for what has been, and is, good about our nation. For just a minute. Because if we can’t find that then our country will be indeed fundamentally transformed. And where will we go when the lights go out of the Shining City on a Hill? A broken America is powerless, no matter who’s in charge.

America still has problems. But we’ve fixed problems in the past. Not perfectly. Not the first time. But we can work on perfect every day. Perhaps we need to return to my younger days. I’m thankful for them. And thankful I live in the greatest country in the history of the world. To paraphrase Aaron Lewis, don’t watch the threads of Old Glory come undone. Please. We the People can right the Ship
