Military Recruitment Another Austin Milley Debacle

By the time you are reading this, Congress will most likely have passed a bill requiring the Pentagon to revoke its vaccine mandates for servicemembers. That is a victory for the rights of military personnel, and a rebuke of the Biden administration and the political apparatchiks populating the Pentagon and the Defense Department. Perhaps this might help military recruitment.

However, it still does not remedy the issue that is currently causing big problems for the military and posing a real threat to national security. The Covid mandates are just part of a left wing, woke, anti-American, and anti-Constitution mindset among flag rank officers in the military, with Milley being the best example of that seditious culture. Milley’s direct boss is the President, but he is also responsible for communicating the instructions and orders of the SecDef, and he has been a head bobbing lackey to Lloyd Austin since Biden took office. Together, the two of them are wrecking the military.

Miley and Austin are quick to blame the economy and a youth population that is increasingly afflicted with drug use, obesity and general ignorance for their own recruiting failures. That certainly has some effect, but the most acute issue is that the military leadership is slandering its own institution and people. Of course, they are quick to say that all the blame for these things originate in the ranks far below their exalted offices. Odd eh? Hardly.

More objective observers see a different problem: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2021/sep/21/the-militarys-milley-disease/

https://nypost.com/2022/07/21/americas-woke-army-is-facing-a-recruiting-nightmare/

As a former military officer and Southern male in my youth, support for the military was always an instinctive position. My family members served proudly for 4 consecutive generations, and I was directly responsible for several high school classmates volunteering in the 1970s. I advocated for the military as a good career for young adults, but that began to change during the Obama administration.

Restrictive ROE policies for our soldiers in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, consistent moves to make the military more a social club than a fighting force, and the abandonment of Americans in Benghazi convinced me that the military was a sick organization. Trump briefly reversed those trends, but the Biden administration has tripled down on stupid, with Milley and Austin cheerleading all the way. If those two incompetent political hacks and their flag officer lackeys announced that their goal was now to emasculate our military and make it totally ineffective, they would not have to change a single thing they are doing.

As I write this, the US Army is missing its annual recruiting goal by 60%. Even among Southern white males, the Army is having huge issues. It is a pathetic and totally predictable outcome. Personally, I would NOT dream of recommending a military career to my grandchildren or any of their peers. My respect for those who volunteer and serve, especially in the combat arms, remains undiminished.

Given the recruitment issue, the intervention of Congress in the Covid vaccine mandate recission might be a blessing. After all, what better time to have a bunch of qualified service members come back on active duty than when the military is desperately in need of personnel. Even better, these folks are already trained!

However, we should not expect to see these people welcomed with open arms by the flag officer community. They are so in thrall to the Biden administration’s woke attitudes, and aware of the purge that Obama imposed on apolitical generals, that they are not about to do anything that would jeopardize their precious careers. It is a continuation of the same phenomenon that we saw in the post-Vietnam military when political generals who had played politics with their soldiers’ lives in that conflict were running the military. Here is how David Stockman, President Reagan’s Director of OMB described the situation in an interview with the Atlantic back in 1981: (emphasis added)

“In late February, months before the defense budget became a subject of Cabinet debate, Stockman privately predicted that Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger, himself a budget director during the Nixon years, would be an ally when he got around to cutting back military spending. “As soon as we get past this first phase in the process, I’m really going to go after the Pentagon. The whole question is blatant inefficiency, poor deployment of manpower, contracting idiocy, and, hell, I think that Cap’s going to be a pretty good mark over there. He’s not a tool of the military-industrial complex. I mean, he hasn’t been steeped in its excuses and rationalizations and ideology for twenty years, and I think that he’ll back off on a lot of this stuff, but you just can’t challenge him head-on without your facts in line. And we’re going to get our case in line and just force it through the presses.”

Stockman shared the general view of the Reagan Administration that the United States needed a major build-up of its armed forces. But he also recognized that the Pentagon, as sole customer for weapons systems, subsidized the arms manufacturers in many direct ways and violated many free-market principles. “The defense budgets in the out-years won’t be nearly as high as we are showing now, in my judgment. Hell, I think there’s a kind of swamp of $10 to $20 to $30 billion worth of waste that can be ferreted out if you really push hard.”

It is blindingly obvious that the top leadership of the military was a disaster 40 years ago. In the interim, abetted by a 20-year debacle in Afghanistan, and a couple of hard left Presidents, that leadership has only gotten worse and more expensive. America can no longer afford their military and fiscal incompetence. Sadly, given that a senile octogenarian is their boss, they are quite safe as they trash the military for the favor of those who hate it. Lloyd Austin and Mark Milley will have at least two more years of implementing their racist, anti-American policies. It is truly frightening to contemplate what the results will be.

  1. Let’s pray that we don’t get into an actual war with a competent adversary with these two traitorous weasels in charge. If ever a purge was needed in the US military, its right now….starting with these two.

  2. The article rightly faults our current military leadership with the demise in interest in military service. As a 33 year US Army veteran who has recruited many young people over the years I also refuse to encourage anyone to enter military service today. In fact, I actively seek and encourage young people to avoid it like a plague. Our military culture and traditions are corrupted by ideological idiots who broke faith with our nation’s taxpaying citizens and devoted veterans. God help us during these dark times.

  3. All I see are two sell out un American traitors. Who gladly became puppets of the deep state. Who yanks their chains telling them what to do and say. Who whole heartily back stab not only America but also backstab and is crippling our military and killing our warriors with the unneeded death jab,
Both deserves nothing less than being gut shot and throw into a pit of pigs for what they are doing but I would settle for a short walk up to the trap door of the gallows.

  4. The Pentagon will probably make a request asking Congress to re-install Poject 100,000 if they haven’t already done so to fulfill their recruitment numbers…

  5. I advised my oldest grandson not to enlist. I told him the morons are in charge of today’s US Military and would think nothing of wasting his life.

As read one of the lines in Apocalypse Now, “The Clowns are in charge, and they’re giving away the circus.”

    • Great advice. And if your grandson happens to be a white, conservative, Christian male, if they didn’t kill him quickly in combat with stupid decisions, they would throw him out the door because of his skin color in 10 years.
