Will Ron DeSantis Run for President?

There has been a lot of speculation about whether Ron DeSantis, the current Governor of Florida, who won reelection by a landslide, will run for President. I think that he would be an excellent President in the same way he has been an excellent governor. I hope he does not run. I would rather he waited four years to run. I like living in DeSantisland, and I think the nation is sorely lacking Red governors who have the guts to stand up to the wokesters, the America haters, the Leftists, the fascists, the racists, and the unaccountable bureaucrats in the global epicenter of stupid (Washington D.C.). Many Red governors are conservative in name only or don’t have the will to stand up and be counted. If he does run, however, I have some unsolicited advice.

First, stay out of the current mood and the infighting. Trump is already being Trump and attacking DeSantis, as described here, here, and here. This tactic worked well for Trump in 2016 when he picked off each primary opponent one at a time. Since the Repugnant Republican party stands for NOTHING other than “we don’t suck as much as the other fellas,” they will do what they do best: fight among themselves and demonstrate that they are unable to govern. See my articles here and here. Haley and Pompeo are other aspiring candidates. It is just a matter of days before the vitriol will start in earnest – accusations and criticisms against the other Presidential hopefuls that will be used later by the Demonic Democrats in their campaign adds. My recommendation to Governor DeSantis is to not let himself get dragged into the tit-for-tat, “Jane, you ignorant slut” cesspool that is endemic in modern American politics. Ronald Regan (the only president I voted FOR instead of against the other guy) admonished that Republicans should not publicly criticize other Republicans. That seems to be their favorite parlor game these days. DeSantis needs to refrain from attacking the other candidates and instead focus on his key messages.

When I had to attend media training, they told us to always turn the question to get back to your key messages. DeSantis needs to decide on his key messages and not let Trump, Haley, Pompeo, or DC America-haters pull him off that message. As I wrote in the articles cited above, the anticipated Red Wave turned into a Red Spittle because the Republicans did not have positive policy alternatives to offer independents as an alternative to more Marxism from DC (on both sides of the aisle). A bag of never-ending (albeit needed) investigations do not count.

Here are my unsolicited suggestions for Governor DeSantis:

  • Reign in the weaponized Federal bureaucracy. Cut the heads off the hydras and replace them with people who will focus on the organizations’’ key missions. If there is any whiff of political indoctrination, Marxism, or different treatment under the law for different demographics, the people responsible must be ruthlessly purged from the government. Focus on law enforcement equally applied to all citizens instead of using law enforcement organizations used for ideology enforcement.
  • Aggressively and strictly adhere to the 10th Amendment. I argue that 90% of Federal spending is unconstitutional and should be stopped immediately. That won’t happen overnight, because a lot of sacred cows will have to be sacrificed, but the Federal government needs to be drastically curtailed and power returned to the States where the Constitution requires it. I authored an article, The Federal Government is the Weakest Link, that included serious recommendations for how to eliminate whole Federal departments and cut spending.
  • Disband the Department of Education. Education is a local issue and should not be dictated by woke activists in D.C. All Federal attempts to fix education have made things worse. Get the Feds out of our schools.
  • Stop all federal involvement in student and housing loans. Their involvement has made education and housing more expensive.
  • Cut spending. According to the Tax Foundation, over 41% of Federal tax revenue comes from individual income tax. Business Insider reported that the Federal Government collected a record $2.6T in income tax revenue in 2022. That means if the Feds only spend $2T each year we will pay off the debt in 100 years. It seems like $2T is a lot of money, and they should be able to “get by” on that. The payoff will happen faster than that, because if we freeze Federal spending at $2T (and don’t adjust it for inflation or to buy more votes) we’ll have an increasing surplus to pour into the debt.
  • All government programs should be monitored. What is the goal? How will we measure effectiveness? When will we evaluate that performance and decide to retain or kill that program? Industry does this; the government should too. After all, it’s our money not their money. I argue that most soft-hearted and softer-headed affirmative action and other welfare programs have increased disparity, poverty, lawlessness, and the disintegration of the family unit. That is the STATED goal of BLM. The Feds should be prohibited from using my tax dollars to help them achieve those goals. I like Senator Scott’s suggestion that all federal laws should sunset after five years. That would be a good time to examine the effectiveness of each program before letting them continue.
  • Fix the Border and the Immigration System. Secure the border. Not Biden “secure.” Really secure. Resurrect Ellis Island. Control the flow of immigrants, human trafficking, and drugs across our borders. Aggressively find and deport people who are here illegally. Grant no amnesty for those who illegally exploited Biden’s orgy of dereliction of duty on our borders. Eliminate the flawed notion of “anchor babies.” Fix the definition of “asylum.” There is no such thing as “economic asylum.” You don’t get to claim asylum because you come for a poor country. People must apply from asylum in another country, not after having entered illegally. Look at the useful and stringent immigration laws of other countries. Ours should be at least as rigorous.
  • Focus the Military on preparedness not wokeness. The DoD does NOT need more money. They need to spend their money more wisely. They have demonstrated they are really good at shooting down $12 balloons with $400k missiles – if NORAD can even find the balloons. Fire all the three- and four-star generals and many (most?) of the senior civilians in the Department of Defense. Reduce the numbers of generals and senior civilians by at least 50%. We have more general officers in uniform today than at the end of World War II, and one-star generals often do work that used to be done by lieutenant colonels. Find senior two-star generals who are warfighters, not politicians, and use them to replace the three- and four-star politicians. Reduce the quadruplication of effort across the services and consolidate them as cross-service programs. Expunge all wokeness and other counter-productive and divisive “training” and focus on warfighting.
  • Describe what you will do to cut inflation and grow the economy. Mostly this should be in the form of making draconian cuts to regulations and emasculating regulatory agencies. Do not let Congress continue to abrogate their responsibilities to unaccountable bureaucrats.
  • Stop stealing resources from the states that are used for woke and unconstitutional programs. This would be done by cutting or eliminating income tax. It is not the Federal government’s job to fix lawlessness in blue cities. That is the purview of the local authorities and the voters. But it is the Federal government’s responsibility to get out of the way and stop forcibly extracting money those communities need.
  • Invest in our crumbling infrastructure. Rejuvenate our power production and distribution network. Launch the construction of hundreds of new nuclear power plants. Stop the war on the fossil fuel industry, but if the people want to move away from fossil fuels in the future it begins by growing the power grid BEFORE mandating people buy inefficient and polluting electric vehicles. Build the infrastructure before the mandates. Modernize bridges, highways, and rails. Work to make passenger rail more attractive and predictable.
  • Put in place incentives (carrots and sticks) to move production of important resources back within the US. As general officers are predicting war with China on 2025, what are we doing to decrease our dependence on China?
  • If the people want him to accomplish these tasks, they need to give him the tools to succeed. This is really important. That means electing conservatives to school boards, local and state positions, and Congress. The President is not king or emperor – even though Biden and his junta behave that way. For the next President to undo the damage from the Biden regime, he needs the people to give him like-minded allies in the government.
  • Choose an heir apparent. When DeSantis vacates the Governor’s office early, who has he groomed to follow him? Politicians in general are really poor at succession planning. He needs to start positioning a DeSantis clone to follow him. If I know that another person cut from the same cloth as DeSantis was waiting in the wings, I would be much more sanguine about him running for President.

Again, I don’t want him to run for President, because we (and I) would lose the benefit he provides as a red governor with guts. If he does run, I want to ensure he is successful (both as a candidate and President). I want him to stay above the fray with fellow Republicans when running and when elected make the needed changes. But I also want to ensure the voters give him the tools he needs to be successful at a federal level.

  1. I can’t agree more. Ron DeSantis will make a fine president, in his time, but does that have to be now? I don’t think so.
He has a lot more to do for Floridians, and, unless running for president is about egos being bruised, and not about service, let the wine age a little.
I don’t see any Republican winning another presidential race, anyway, until a whole lot of laws get changed and enforced, so what point would he make by running for an unattainable position?

  2. If Gov. Ron DeSantis is the GOP POTUS candidate, I’ll re-register to vote.

If Gov. Kristi Noem is the GOP VP candidate, I’ll run to the polling place and be first in line.

On balance, Governors make better Presidents than US Senators.

Trump served a valid and important purpose by outing the Swamp. His legacy is assured. But his time has passed.
