What’s Peculiar Isn’t Peculiar; Name that quote: “There is nothing new under the sun.” What seems peculiarly unique in the affairs of humanity isn’t. Yes, every individual event is unique by definition. Individual is unitary. But, what happens in and among groups of people isn’t peculiarly unique, because “People are people.” Consequently, the present and past can be linked in oddly peculiar ways. Like the American South in secession and France in jihad.
Both situations deal with how significant minorities co-exist with the majority in a society.
Lazy Leftist pundits liken the riots in France to our Civil Rights Movement. It’s a false analogy. Paris isn’t Birmingham in 1963. Or our Northern cities in the 60s Summers after Watts.
Go back to when most of American society couldn’t square slavery with Americanism in the first half of the 1800. The Slave States remaining called a sinful barbarity their “Peculiar Institution.”
The U.S. began with all states as Slave States. One by one, state legislatures constitutionally renounced their state’s right to allow chattel slavery. It was done easily in the North where there were few slaves and the Mid-West where Black immigration was severely restricted. But, what was to be done where 8m Whites, 3.5m Slaves, and the majority of the .5m Free Blacks lived?
The answer today is simple: Free them immediately. It wasn’t so simple in 1861. Booker T. Washington wrote in “Up From Slavery” how deprived and oppressed slaves were – of the simplest skills for living freely as citizens. No one knew, as Thomas Jefferson said, what do to about holding the “tiger by the tail.” That seems like such a racist insult today, but the genocide of Whites in Haiti, Nat Turner’s massacre, and John Brown’s abortive attempt at a race war were in the minds of people who had no case for keeping slavery.
No one had a clear answer on how to end slavery without turmoil and bloodshed. So, it ended after great turmoil and bloodshed and finally when the recently returned Southern States voted for the 13th Amendment.
The Reconstruction which followed wasn’t pretty. Reconstruction begat de jure segregation. It took a hundred years to get race relations right legally. It’s taken another 60 years to truly integrate those willing.
Our American experience reveals the rocky road to took to assimilate a significant minority with the majority population.
Fast forward to France now. For three nights there’s been rioting.
The problem isn’t the Racism per se. It’s about a growing, aggressive, unassimilated Muslim minority. How many of the hundreds of Muslim “No-Go” zones are on fire? Where else is there rioting?
Looks like the French didn’t learn the lessons after their eight year war in Algeria. Algeria was a Department of France. Like Alaska and Hawaii are U.S. States. But the Muslims in Algeria fought for independence because the French “Pieds Noir” who lived there didn’t inculcate the Muslims, who were the vast majority, with (Christian) Western Civilization. They had over a hundred years to do it, but didn’t.
Culture commands. When the Muslims gained power about 900k French people abruptly fled Algeria in 1962.
Then, 70k Algerians, who already lived in France, grew over the years to become 5m Muslims from the French-speaking Maghreb and across Dar al-Islam in France’s population of 66m. And, the Muslim minority has a population bomb of one in four French under the age of 25. So, in 20 years half the young people in France will be Muslim.
Demographics are destiny.
Of course, the problem is that Muslims who truly believe in the Koran as written can’t be assimilated into Western Civilization. Islam doesn’t fit in either the former Christian or the current Post-Christian versions of France. Islam is antithetical to the democratic freedoms and personal liberty of the West.
Certainly, Muslims who are Muslims in name only, like Unitarians are “Christian”, can live peacefully anywhere.
But, Muslims who are Islamists can’t be assimilated. In France, elsewhere in Europe, or in Canada and America.
What happens when a growing, hostile minority can’t be assimilated?
We didn’t have that problem. Black Americans integrated into American society. The ghetto, ivory tower, media, and professional race pimp exceptions prove the rule.
The French people, who remain peasants in proportion to their subservience under socialism despite their pretense otherwise, will likely engage in a ‘Jacquerie.” That’s a Medieval local peasants’ revolt when the lord of the manor is too much to take. Even for a peasant.
If the Islamists push the today’s peasants too hard, rape too many girls, and destroy too much, what’s left of French manhood will push back hard.
That jibe is intended for the metrosexual French like Macron, not for the great soldiers who served admirably since Napoleon swept across Europe. It’s going to be very ugly.
What is happening isn’t a cartoonish morality play about “racism.”
France was integrating Black Africans and Asians from her colonies as full-fledged citizens well before World War I. It’s not Black vs White. France has a multi-ethnic population. It’s about Totalitarian Islamists vs. all others.
In 2012, when I was working with the NATO liaison officers at our Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, I asked a Danish officer where the Jacquerie would start. He acknowledged that it would happen. He ventured it would be Germany except their World War II guilt is too great for them to initiate any violence.
He said it could be the Netherlands, UK, or France. Time would tell.
And, so the unfolding of time speaks forecasts into facts.
I’ve known such a trans-European Civil War could happen since my first “Futures” study in the early 90s. Could.
It will get worse before it gets better because people are people.
