Cemeteries and Systemic Racism

Against my better judgment, I watched a CBS Sunday Morning story with my wife. It started off as a heart tugging human relations piece about a black cemetery’s headstones that all ended up being used as scrap to help stop riverbank erosion, coupled with the quest by certain historians and family members to locate those headstones and track down the bodies that went with them.

Then, it morphed into another predictable screed about racism in America, and how the only reason this happened is because it was a black cemetery, and how this societyth4e words of the host, “dehumanizes black people”.  They interviewed a black man who was talking about his great grandfather’s missing headstone, and the fact he didn’t know where it was. He said he can’t believe that “they” just threw it in the trash like that.  Even my wife was initially disheartened, upset by all the “racism” that was on display in this whole incident.  So, I weighed in and started asking her some pointed questions.

Do you know what happens to cemeteries when they fill up and can no longer take new bodies?  Exactly what happened to this black cemetery.

What makes you think this cemetery was victimized by racism? The black graveyard in question was taken over by the city; that city being Washington DC. Since Washington DC has been ruled by black politicians for decades, does that mean those black politicians who sold the black cemetery are racists?  Not likely, the most logical explanation is they sold the cemetery to raise cash.

My wife was upset that the developer would be so callous with these black gravesites, but when I looked it up on the Internet, I found that is apparently standard practice. What happens whenever a developer acquires a cemetery? When a developer takes over a graveyard, the city/county/state that gives them possession typically allows the new owner to pretty much build on it as they see fit. In some cases, they make the new owner cremate or rebury the bodies, but in many cases they don’t. There is no distinction legally between black or white cemeteries in terms of how that property is handled.

The black man who said that he was distraught over the fact that his great grandfather’s grave had been desecrated in such a callous fashion, was not asked if he knew beforehand about the grave being moved, or if he just found out about it when a reporter from Sunday Morning let him know. My bet? He didn’t know where the grave was, and he couldn’t care less about it until he ended up on TV. My great grandfather was a good, hard working, Christian man, but he died when I was 14 years old. I have no clue where his grave is. I never lived near my great grandfather, and I’m not even sure where he went to church. How many Americans know where their great grandparents’ graves are?

The story then went on to say there are thousands of black graveyards in America that are being destroyed, and once again hinted that racism is the reason this is happening. BS!! I can go to my parents’ house right now, walk 400 yards from the front door into the woods, and there is a graveyard that has the bodies of probably 150 white people in it, and nobody has taken care of it for decades. There was an old country church that used to stand on that site, and the people who attended church there buried their kin in the churchyard. When the church disbanded, the graveyard was abandoned. I can find abandoned graveyards like that all over the county in which I attended high school, because it has fallen on hard times economically, and lots of people have moved out, leaving abandoned houses, churches, and cemeteries all over the place. Race has nothing to do with it. It’s merely about economics. The timber companies who bought most of that land do not give a damn if there are graveyards in the way when they come in to clear-cut the trees. They care even less if the graves contain white or black remains. CBS was clearly race baiting in this story and doing so blatantly and dishonestly.

The mainstream media are a huge problem in this country. Not only are they dishonest, socialist, and hell-bent on sowing racial discord, they are also anti American. I cannot believe anyone who loves this country would ever watch their garbage, unless it is to gather information on the enemy. My wife is a good, conservative woman, and well educated, but she still fell under their spell for about 15 minutes. A lot of Americans would watch that story and be permanently convinced that it was a prime example of systemic racism.  The media is creating Idiocracy before our eyes.
