The Israeli Gun Control: Evaluating the Tragedy and Ban on Personal Security

Introduction

The recent tragedy in Israel has sparked intense debates surrounding the Israeli government’s approach to gun control. As a staunch supporter of personal freedoms, I argue that the Israeli government’s strict gun control regulations may have inadvertently contributed to the recent tragic events. In this article, I explore the thesis that disarmament of citizens can have detrimental unintended consequences.

The Israeli Gun Control Landscape

Israel has long been known for its stringent gun control laws. Citizens who wish to own a (one) firearm in Israel must adhere to a series of specific criteria, undergo comprehensive background checks, and receive mandatory training. While these regulations are rooted in concerns over national security and public safety. Their government doesn’t trust their people with an individual God given right, nor the right to self-defense.

When Neighbors Want You Dead

Israel’s unique geopolitical situation is undeniable, with numerous security threats in the region. However, the governments ill-fated approach provided collective security, and denied individuals the ability to provide for their own personal security.  The opposing viewpoint asserts citizens should have the right to protect themselves and their loved ones when faced with imminent threats. The Second Amendment in the United States is upholds latter perspective and acknowledges the human right to self-defense against “all enemies, foreign and domestic.”

The Right to Self-Defense

In many conservative circles, the right to self-defense is seen as a fundamental human right, regardless of one’s geographical location. Both the Torah and the New Testament affirm this human right. Advocates argue that personal security should not be left solely in the hands of the state. We contend that disarming law-abiding citizens can potentially leave them vulnerable to harm and unable to protect themselves and their loved ones in the face of danger.

Conclusion

The recent tragedy in Israel should make every American reevaluate the balance between personal freedom and collective security. While strict gun control laws in Israel may be rooted in genuine ideological concerns, they ultimately fail in protecting individual liberties and ultimately compromise safety and security.  As Benjamin Franklin, so eloquently stated, “Those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither.”

Citation for both the Torah and the New Testament contain passages and principles that are often interpreted as upholding the right to self-defense. Here are some examples from both:

1. **Old Testament (Torah) Examples:**

    a. **Exodus 22:2-3** (NIV): “If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed; but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed.”

    b. **Nehemiah 4:14** (NIV): “After I looked things over, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials and the rest of the people, ‘Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.’

2. **New Testament Examples:**

    a. **Luke 22:36** (NIV): “He said to them, ‘But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.’
