Using a Decision Analysis Tool to Decide a President in 2024

In a world driven by numbers and influenced by the intricate workings of government decisions, citizens can apply a mathematical lens to help select their next president. When faced with the crucial decision of determining the most fitting candidate, here’s a simplified numerical approach that echoes the grading system to evaluate leadership traits:

1. **Competence and Leadership Skills:** Rate each candidate on their competence and past track record of effective leadership on a scale of 0-20.

2. **Vision and Policy Focus:** Assess the candidate’s articulated vision for the nation’s future and the coherency of their policy proposals, rating them from 0-20.

3. **Integrity and Ethical Standards:** Evaluate the integrity, honesty, and ethical standards of each candidate, giving them a score between 0-20.

4. **Capacity for Collaboration and Unity:** Consider the candidate’s ability to foster collaboration and unity across party lines, assigning a score out of 20.

5. **Focus on Real Issues, Not Distractions:** Analyze whether the candidate avoids succumbing to media traps and distractions, giving them a score ranging from 0-20.

Now add up the 5 scores to get their letter grade… Using this method, a score of 70 is akin to a C- grade in school. A score of 90 or above is like finding a unicorn.

In essence, employing a numerical approach enables citizen voters to break down complex decision-making into quantifiable parameters, aiding in a more structured evaluation of presidential candidates. While this method simplifies the evaluation process, it encourages voters to reflect on critical leadership attributes, thereby facilitating a more informed and analytical decision in selecting the nation’s leader.

  1. I think this would be great for organizations that rate candidates and put out voter guides. For an individual, once you do the research to be able to grade them, most people will automatically know which one they want to support.

The biggest problem we have in this country in civics is not government tyranny or the media, but an apathetic, lazy electorate. We have people voting who don’t know and don’t care, but have been convinced it is their duty. Few people really know a lot about what they are voting for. For the President or Governor, they may know, but not the down ballot races. Primaries are even harder because you don’t have the party labels to offer some distinction without knowing anything else.

It is a problem that I don’t know how to solve. I fear the only way to solve that is for things to get really, really bad and force them to care.
