Is the U.S. “Frog Nation 2.0?”

Well over a year ago, a letter entitled “Frog Nation” appeared in the Transylvania Times, whimsically suggesting that an irresponsible indifference and inaction toward seriously worrying matters was like being the silly mythical frog, sitting in a pot of water approaching the boiling point, blithely indifferent to the fact that the rising temperature would eventually kill him. Causes for that concern included a seriously divided citizenry, failing education standards, rising crime rates, a weakened economy, dangerous challenges overseas and the implicit failure of leaders to effectively address those concerns.

Over the past year since that letter, none of those concerns have been materially assuaged. Worse, since then an increasing, unprecedented number of illegal immigrants has been allowed – even encouraged — to enter the country, accompanied by a steady flow of lethal drugs responsible for the deaths each year of literally tens of thousands of Americans. There has been lots of discussion and consternation about all these concerns, but insufficient meaningful action.

Adding insult to injury, in early January, the dangerous and unconscionable lack of discipline and accountability within the Biden Administration were startingly exposed by the dangerous break in the national security chain of command by the embarrassment of the four-day “disappearance” of the Secretary of Defense, not to mention the simultaneous “non-availability for duty” of both his deputy and his chief of staff…all without the president’s knowledge. The subsequent hastily-issued White House January 9th directive for a “review of Cabinet protocols for delegating authority” was laughable, further revealing the less-than-serious, amateur incompetence of the current Administration.

The very good news is that later this year, we will all have a priceless opportunity to move beyond lethargic, pessimistic indifference. We will do so by responsibly informing ourselves, voting for candidates in whom we have confidence, and then remaining engaged to see that those leaders fulfill their obligations. No more “Frog Nation”!!
