Faith, Leadership, and the Secular Soul of America: A Call to Rediscover Unity

In the pages of American history, leaders like George Washington and Dwight D. Eisenhower demonstrated the unifying power of faith during challenging times. Their leadership created a nation committed to shared values and divine guidance. George Washington symbolized this in suppressing a conspiracy against the fledgling new government by evoking divine providence Eisenhower with the introduction of “Under God” into the pledge of allegiance, and “In God We Trust” on all our money during the Cold War.

Despite this historical foundation, there has been a discernible shift away from invoking God in public discourse since the end Cold War in the 1990s. That’s when things began to spin out of control for American culture.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed a challenge reminiscent of historical crises. Yet, the response lacked the widespread calls to God witnessed in earlier times. Elected Leaders were silent about God. To make things worse church attendance was even banned in some locations. These  restrictions on religious gatherings, challenged our fundamental rights without the concerns for those with genuine deeply held religious beliefs.

Reflecting on this historical perspective, the omission of God from public discourse, especially in times of crisis, represents a departure from foundational principles. Today’s leaders have the opportunity to revive the spirit of unity “Under God,” and to recognize the enduring strength that faith provides in facing national challenges.

The shifting soul of America reflects not just changes in rhetoric but a departure from foundational principles. Embracing the principles of being a nation “Under God” and renewing the commitment to “In God We Trust” allows the United States to navigate modern challenges with a renewed sense of purpose and shared values. The call to action is clear: rediscover and embrace the enduring strength that faith provides in shaping the nation’s identity.
