Today, over and over, we hear the screeching of the deranged leftists that somebody, somewhere, has been “misgendered.” And now, the Biden administration has made it official with its changes to Title IX: you can be accused of harassment if you misgender someone.
What many today have forgotten is that we’ve been down this road before. And sadly, we all rolled over for this nonsense early on.
Many have forgotten when we started labeling women “Ms.”
When I was in junior high school, back in the Stone Age of the early 1970s, I had an English teacher named “Ms. Smith.”[1] You see, “Ms.” Smith demanded, even with vicious rants, that she not be called “Miss.” That was disrespectful and wrong, and how dare you disrespect her!
And what did we all do? We gave in to the demands of people like her and Gloria Steinem, with her “Ms” magazine.
Now, even supposedly cultured nations like Germany have gone the way of woke, having eliminated “Fraülein” and “gnädige Frau” from their vocabulary. The first is an obvious reference to a young, single woman. But the loss of the latter is even worse, as it was an expression of deep respect for an older, matriarchal lady. If you ever watch episodes of the old sitcom “Hogan’s Heroes,” you will hear this expression used quite often.
Much of what we are seeing today started well over 100, and even 150 years ago. From Roscoe Pound and the corruption of law to John Dewey and the corruption of education, the seeds for our current crises were laid long ago. The bad crop even began to rear its ugly head many decades ago, but next to nothing was done to arrest the rot.
Nations destroyed by revolution faced this same drip-drip-drip of an assault against their traditional norms. France in the 1700s, Russia in the late 1800s, and Germany in the early 1900s, all experienced this attack. The premise was a cry for more “freedom.” Once the old order crumbled, the New Order stepped in and established new absolutes that had to be followed… or else. Often, the punishments for violating the new absolutes were more draconian than under the old order. And, once the revolution was completed, those crying for the new freedoms quickly vanished, either into camps or before firing squads. Useful idiots never learn, because they rarely live beyond their usefulness to teach others.
We all recall the story of the “Emperor’s New Clothes.” Today, when the child cries out that the old man is naked, instead of shame, the old man orders the boy to be seized and stripped of his lemonade stand and piggy bank, even as the naked dude with dementia skips merely along. In some ways it is comical, and all we can do is chuckle at the emperor’s insanity.
Most of the world doesn’t accept this insanity. Why should we?
