June 27 is a day of deep reflection for our family. On this day, National PTSD Awareness Day, we join members of DeploymentBrands.com and other families to recognize the profound impact post-traumatic stress has on countless lives. This day carries an even greater significance for us as we remember my father, Lou, a brilliant research physics scientist at Case Western Reserve University, who suffered from severe PTSD as a result of his harrowing experiences as a combat engineer during World War II in Italy.
My father’s journey was marked by bravery, resilience, and an unwavering dedication to his country. However, the psychological scars left by the war were profound and long-lasting. As a combat engineer, he witnessed the devastation of battle, faced the constant threat of danger, and endured the loss of countless comrades. These experiences left an indelible mark on him, manifesting in a way that deeply affected our family.
Growing up, I often saw the silent battles my father fought within himself. The nightmares, the sudden moments of withdrawal, and the emotional distance were all signs of the PTSD that haunted him. Despite his brilliance and contributions to the field of physics, he carried a burden that was invisible to most but all too real to those who loved him.
Our family’s journey through the shadows of PTSD was challenging. We struggled to understand the depth of my father’s pain and to find ways to support him. Yet, it was his enduring love for us and his determination to provide for his family that kept us strong. His legacy was not only one of scientific achievement but also of resilience and the silent strength he showed every day.
Inspired by his grandfather’s struggles and driven by a desire to make a difference, my son, US Army Captain Andrew, chose to serve his country and give back in a unique way. As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Andrew works tirelessly to help those suffering from PTSD, providing them with the care, understanding, and support they need. His dedication is a testament to the impact my father had on his life and a continuation of the legacy of service that runs deep in our family.
Andrew and his wife Andrea honored my father in a beautiful way by naming their son Louis, after his grandfather. Little Louis is a symbol of hope, resilience, and the enduring love that binds our family. Each time I look into his eyes, I see a reflection of my father’s spirit, a reminder of the sacrifices made, and the strength to carry on.
On National PTSD Awareness Day, as we gather to honor and remember those affected by PTSD, we also celebrate the lives of those who continue to fight for a better tomorrow. We acknowledge the challenges, the pain, and the triumphs. For our family, it is a day to reflect on my father’s legacy, to support Andrew in his mission, and to cherish the future that little Louis represents.
This day is not just a remembrance of the past but a call to action for the present and the future. It is a reminder that the effects of war extend far beyond the battlefield, touching the lives of families and communities. It is a day to stand together, to support one another, and to work towards a world where the invisible wounds of PTSD are met with compassion, understanding, and hope.
In honoring my father, Lou, we honor all those who have faced the horrors of war and the silent battles that follow. We honor the families who stand by them, the healthcare professionals who dedicate their lives to their care, and the future generations who carry forward the legacy of resilience and service.
