Embracing Faith Amidst Secular Symbols

Reflecting on my personal journey, I recall how my discovery that many of our holidays have roots in pagan rituals initially shook my Christian-centric ideology. As I matured, I realized that even the days of the week are named after secular deities, reminding me that such symbols surround us in everyday life. 

In Romans 14:5, Paul writes, “One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.” This scripture underscores the importance of individual conviction and the freedom we have in our faith. It helped me understand that while these symbols exist, our focus should remain on the principles and teachings of Christianity.

While it’s possible to tolerate cultural elements that don’t align with our beliefs, we must still be cautious and discerning, particularly when it comes to issues of ethics and morality. Philippians 4:8 advises us, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” This encourages us to seek and uphold what aligns with our faith, even in a world saturated with secular influences.

Recognizing these symbols doesn’t mean we need to reject our surroundings entirely. Instead, it calls for a balanced approach, appreciating cultural traditions while steadfastly adhering to our faith’s core values. It’s a journey of understanding and maturity, navigating the intersection of faith and culture with wisdom and discernment.
