The American Dream: Enjoy It While It Lasts, Folks

We Americans have enjoyed the highest quality of life in human history. Let’s be honest—no other civilization has come close to the level of comfort, convenience, and sheer indulgence we’ve managed to create. Ancient Egyptians built pyramids, but we’ve built drive-thru Starbucks. The Romans had aqueducts, but we have indoor plumbing, Wi-Fi, and Amazon Prime. In the grand scheme of things, we’ve been living like kings and queens for the last century, and it’s been one hell of a ride. But here’s the catch: nothing this good lasts forever.

Consider retirement, for example. For most of human history, people worked until they literally dropped dead in the fields, or they just lived with their kids and prayed for food. Then, along came our modern system where you could work for a few decades, collect a pension or Social Security, and spend your golden years lounging in Florida, golfing, and complaining about “kids these days.” It’s a system that previous civilizations couldn’t have dreamed of—a glorious period of doing nothing but enjoying the fruits of your labor while the checks keep coming. But, like everything in life, it has an expiration date.

The signs are everywhere. Social Security? On shaky ground. Pensions? Becoming as rare as a rotary phone. And who can forget the looming crisis of underfunded retirement savings? Sure, we’ve had it good, but the financial house of cards that’s been holding up this cushy life is wobbling. Add to that the fact that we’re living longer (a real curveball for a system designed when people kicked the bucket in their 60s), and it’s clear that the days of easy retirement may soon be a nostalgic story we tell our grandkids—if we can afford grandkids.

Meanwhile, we’ve gotten used to a lifestyle that no empire could have maintained. We expect comfort, instant gratification, and an endless supply of cheap goods. But global shifts, inflation, and resource depletion have other ideas. The truth is, our current way of life has been subsidized by cheap energy, abundant resources, and a pretty stable global economy. When any of these things falter, and they will, we’re going to be in for a rude awakening. The Romans had their fall, and they didn’t even have to worry about the stock market.

So, enjoy it while it lasts, America. We’ve had a good run. We’ve managed to squeeze out the best quality of life in human history, and for that, we should be grateful. But let’s not kid ourselves: all good things come to an end. And when this ride stops, we’ll have to face the reality that maybe, just maybe, we’ve been living on borrowed time and our grandkids tax money…
