Ballot harvesting, drop boxes, robocalls, flyers, brain-numbing commercials, and biased opinion columns may win elections, but common sense Judeo-Christian ethics are the enduring cornerstone of a “more perfect union.”
Parroting partisan talking points doesn’t make someone a sage. Wisdom seekers are interested in truth, not propaganda; they ask serious questions, give serious answers, and always propose sound arguments.
Our Founders, despite their imperfections, possessed these qualities. The Federalist Papers were written in support of the Constitution by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay, under the pseudonym Publius.
The Federalist Papers, along with the Declaration of Independence, and the U.S. Constitution should be at the top of every American’s reading list. Here are a few blurbs from Federalist 15 that could have been written last week:
- We’re approaching the final stage of national humiliation.
- We owe tremendous debts without a satisfactory provision for repayment.
- We have valuable assets under the control of foreign powers.
- Our troops, our treasury, and our government are in bad condition, and our words are not taken seriously by other nations.
- Our situation has become
These essays, and the grand experiment in self-governance that followed marked a special time in human history. For a brief period, American leaders engaged the citizenry in direct, open, honest, and respectful dialogue. Our Founders believed that virtuous human beings were fit for self-rule. They also knew that vicious people would crash and burn.
These great men got it! They weren’t fire and brimstone preachers but they did understand what every philosophical and theological master understood since the dawn of Western civilization. Happiness is consistent with and a consequence of soul perfection.
That is precisely what is meant by forming a more perfect union. The Founder’s mission wasn’t to instantly solve every problem but to create a political framework so virtuous people could flourish.
Today, most people rarely, if ever, reflect on the concepts of virtue, inalienable rights, and a more perfect union. This is evident in the lack of bipartisan outrage toward open borders, unfettered abortion, gender mutilation, school library porn, and a host of other subhuman nonsense.
Gratefully, the Federalist Papers weren’t written by lunatics. They were reasonable appeals made by reasonable people, that were in harmony with the laws of nature and nature’s God.
Imagine that, competent leaders and a polity ordered to an immutable natural law. Today, that stance will get you maligned, canceled, fired, investigated as an extremist, and maybe even jailed.
God forgive us, for squandering so many blessings and so many sacrifices!
