The Dumbing Down of the VPs- Being Dumb and Dumber

One critical thing I learned early on in politics was the “dumbing down” effect. When a politician gets elected to senior office, one of the first mistakes he makes is to hire a chief of staff who is dumber than he is. After all, he doesn’t want somebody on the staff to outshine him. The same goes for other members of the staff. The chief of staff will in turn hire people that are dumber than him.

The same occurs in corporations, and is the reason why sole proprietor businesses can beat out many corporations in the long haul. In a sole proprietor business, the owner could be as dumb as a brick, but if he hires smart people on his team his company can flourish and succeed. The smart people can’t kick the owner out by outshining him. Why? Because he’s the owner, of course.

In corporations, CEOs, board members, and upper management don’t hire smart middle managers. They hire “team players,” people who will not rock the boat with innovative thinking. In turn, middle managers will not hire smart store managers for the same reason. However, if the store manager at the bottom comes up with a great idea and pushes it up the chain of command, one of two things will happen to it. The middle manager will stomp on it, usually by letting it die on the vine. Or he’ll steal it as his own idea. I know… I’ve seen it happen on multiple occasions.

And now the Democrats have Tim Walz. He brags about growing up in small-town Nebraska. He brags about riding his bike till the lights came on at night. He brags that he went on to be a teacher and joined the National Guard. In many ways, Walz and I have the same pedigree. I grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. I too, rode my bike in the summer nights until the lights came on. I went into the Army when I was 17 and rode tanks in the Fulda Gap. I went to college, managed a retail store, and then went on to teach high school history while also serving in the National Guard, the Reserves, and doing political work.

And yet, that is where our paths diverge. For one, I don’t claim I was somewhere important when I wasn’t. We all can have fading memories, but I don’t claim I was in combat in the Persian Gulf when I was managing a retail store in Mississippi. Walz’s claim was not just foolish… it’s just plain dumb, largely made because he’s a braggart, a dumb person trying to embellish his importance. But then again, if he can believe that boys can become girls and need feminine products in the boys bathroom, imagine what other fantasies he clings to.

Walz has demonstrated the truth of the point I made above… that dumb people will look for dumber people to be their sidekicks in organizations that they don’t own. A few decades ago, we had Presidents that at least spoke and looked intelligent. The slide away from that began with Bill Clinton, and accelerated with “W,” with his “deer in the headlights” look.

And now we just might get Harris and Walz. Indeed, we are on the path of dumb and dumber.

John Wayne is quoted as saying “Life is tough, but it’s tougher when you’re stupid.” With Aunt Kamy and Tampon Tim at the helm of the ship of state, life will get really tough.
