Forget Climate Change: Let’s Talk About the Real Threat—An EMP Meltdown

While some are busy warning us about climate change and what our summers might look like in 2100, perhaps we should be more concerned about something that could knock us back to the Stone Age tomorrow: an EMP. Yes, an Electromagnetic Pulse, the mother of all electronic shutdowns, could fry our precious grid and everything that plugs into it. From the U.S. EMP Commission’s 2008 report to more recent updates, government officials have been sounding the alarm that an EMP, whether from a solar storm or a nuclear detonation, could devastate our infrastructure far faster than rising sea levels ever could .

Imagine it—no power, no internet, and no way to make a phone call. Forget streaming services and electric cars; an EMP could leave us fighting for essentials like food and water. The 2008 EMP Commission report warned that up to 90% of Americans could perish within a year if the power grid were down due to a high-altitude EMP attack . Let that sink in: 90%. But instead, we’re focused on banning plastic straws and fretting over the possibility of one extra hurricane a year.

Government and military officials know about this risk. The EMP Commission’s reports weren’t published for fun; they were meant to shake people awake. However, no one’s interested in discussing the likelihood of every electronic device in your life suddenly becoming a paperweight. Instead, we’re glued to debates on car emissions and carbon footprints. Meanwhile, an EMP could make our climate concerns irrelevant in one blinding flash. The kicker? We don’t need to reinvent civilization to be ready for an EMP; we just need a resilient power grid, some spare transformers, and maybe a few grounded bunkers.

Climate change might be a long-term issue, but an EMP is an instant show-stopper. While the climate narrative rolls on, it’s worth noting that our current grid wouldn’t stand a chance against a large-scale EMP. The technology to protect it exists, but the priority? Well, it seems like it’s still somewhere down the list. Instead of adding wind turbines, maybe we should be thinking about how to keep the lights on at all.

So next time someone tells you to worry about the next century’s weather forecast, remind them of the real looming threat—the one that could take us back to candles and outhouses in a matter of minutes.
