The Hope of the World

In this Advent season, it’s a time of hope and waiting. What are we hoping and waiting for? Nothing less than the arrival of Jesus Christ, the Messiah!

As we reflect on the meaning of these days before Christmas, let’s take a look back in history at a familiar prophecy.

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulders, and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)

Isaiah uses five awe-inspiring names for our Lord that encourage us, thrill us, and fill us with hope:

“You are wonderful, Lord, and you deserve all praise….” (Psalm 145:3)

 ^“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26)

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save.” (Zephaniah 3:17)

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.” (Isaiah 40:28)

“For He himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility.” (Ephesians 2:14)

During this season, while we wait for the birth of the One who will change the world, let’s meditate on who Jesus is—Wonderful, the Counselor, the Mighty God, the Prince of Peace. And the hope of the world!

“For whatever was written in former days was written
for our instruction, that through endurance and
through the encouragement of the Scriptures,
we might have hope.”
(Romans 15:4)
