How to Argue Like an Adult: 3 Simple Rules for Online Debate

It’s no secret that respectful debate is a lost art. Instead of thoughtful discussions, online arguments often devolve into name-calling, emotional outbursts, and tribal finger-pointing. Even our so-called leaders can’t seem to engage in a real debate without resorting to cheap shots and scripted soundbites. If debate is still being taught in schools, it’s clear that the lessons aren’t sticking. To bring some sanity back to online discussions, here are three simple rules we should all follow:

1. Attack Ideas, Not People

• Good debates focus on logic and reasoning, not personal insults.

• Saying “You’re just a member of [X group]” or “You’re an idiot” does nothing to prove your point.

• Instead of assuming bad intent, engage with the actual argument—not the person making it.

2. No Cheap Dismissals

• “You wouldn’t say that to my face.” Maybe, maybe not—but that doesn’t address the argument.

• “You just used AI, so your point is invalid.” Tools don’t make an argument wrong; bad reasoning does.

• “This is all just [X political side] propaganda.” Labeling an argument instead of engaging with it is lazy and unconvincing.

3. Emotions Are Fine, but Logic Wins

• Passion is great, but facts and reasoning should drive the conversation, not knee-jerk emotional reactions.

• Screaming in ALL CAPS or making everything about feelings over facts won’t win anyone over.

• If you feel yourself getting too emotional to respond logically, take a break and come back with a clear head.

Final Thought:

Debate should be about finding truth, not just “winning.” When people argue with maturity, we actually learn from each other. But when debates become all about personal attacks, tribalism, and emotional meltdowns, the discussion turns into noise. Let’s raise the standard—because right now, we’re failing at the basics.
