Our Federal Court

The Federal Court System In These United States

SUPREME COURT: Hears appeals from the Circuit Courts. There is no requirement that the Supreme Court must hear all or any cases. The reality of this selectivity is due to an overload of cases and sometimes for political reasons.

FEDERAL CIRCUIT COURT: Appellant level court for matters related to international trade, customs and patent infringement, district courts and the Court of Claims. There are 13 Circuits.

COURT OF CLAIMS: Adjudicates claims against the government, such as injury or loss caused by the government or an agent of the government.

FEDERAL DISTRICT COURTS: These courts hear civil and criminal matters as they pertain to federal law. There are 94 Districts.

COURT OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE: This is a Special Court of original jurisdiction to handle disputes concerning trade practices between citizens of the United States and foreign countries.

TAX COURT: This is a court of original jurisdiction for citizens and business disputes over federal taxes.

COURT OF MILITARY APPEALS: An appellant level Special Court to hear appeals from military courts.

Though one has the 6thAmendment right a trial and a 1stAmendment right to appeal, there is no right to have the appeal accepted for review by any court.
