“The Signal”

Later that night, Caleb inserted the drive into a quarantined laptop he hadn’t connected to the internet in years. The data was raw — decrypted field reports, video clips of beings that didn’t blink, not even under muzzle flash, and a deep audio file. The signal.

He played it once, then again. A low, undulating tone that triggered something visceral. Like it was inside his skull. The frequency wasn’t meant for humans.

He checked the metadata. The signal was being bounced through satellites leased to a defunct European biotech firm. It originated near the Arctic Circle, from a base built during the Cold War. Or so the cover story claimed.

Caleb leaned back. Was this how it started? The Fall all over again — but with tech, corporations, and fake peace treaties?

His instincts screamed one word: prepare.

He scribbled a single verse in the corner of his field notebook:

“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood…”

Then, for the first time in years, Caleb loaded a magazine into his sidearm and prayed with his eyes open.

Caleb leaned back in his chair, jaw tight. The intercepted message wasn’t just chatter—it referenced GeneGate, a classified biotech initiative tied to post-vaccine genome editing.

“That wasn’t just a jab,” said Andrew quietly. “The mRNA platform unlocked gene expression pathways—human DNA was left wide open. And someone—or something—walked through.”

Caleb stared at the screen. He suddenly remembered a briefing buried in a secure vault: rumors that non-human DNA signatures had been identified in blood samples post-vaccine. It was dismissed as conspiracy theory.

But now…

“They didn’t just change people,” Caleb muttered. “They prepared them.”
