Warped Speed: A Novella (Chapter 6)

Chapter 6

The Breach

One of Rue’s contacts—a chaplain turned whistleblower—sent word of an underground lab near Detroit. Genetic research. Neural-link trials. Tech merged with something not human.

The three geared up and infiltrated the site.

What they saw changed everything: hybrid cadavers stored in liquid suspension, flickering monitors showing DNA strain charts labeled “EL-33M”—Elilim. Nephilim. It wasn’t just science. It was spiritual war, wrapped in biotech.

Caleb documented what he could, but their extraction was rushed. Security was closing in.

As the team moved through the sterile, dimly lit corridor of the underground lab, Caleb took point, his suppressed M4 sweeping the corners. Andrew trailed close behind, overloaded with his laptop, drives, and two thermal-imaging sensors he’d yanked from a control panel. Rue covered their rear, his old-school eyes scanning every shadow like a hawk bred in darkness.

The tension was suffocating. Caleb had just given the silent hand signal to move left when a side door exploded open—two hybrid security operatives emerged, fully armored and fast. Too fast.

Caleb fired first, dropping one with a double tap to the faceplate.

The second raised a compact plasma rifle—prototype tech Caleb had only seen in DARPA files. It locked onto Andrew.

Time slowed.

Andrew froze. His weapon was slung and useless.

Before Caleb could shout, Rue stepped into the line of fire. He shoved Andrew to the deck with his left arm and turned just enough to catch the blast across his right shoulder. The bolt of energy hissed as it tore through flesh and fabric, sending Rue reeling into the wall with a muffled grunt.

Caleb returned fire, the sharp crack of 5.56 rounds echoing through the corridor. The second attacker dropped, weapon clattering to the floor.

“Rue!” Caleb shouted, rushing to his side.

Rue was slumped against the wall, his boonie hat knocked askew, blood soaking through his shirt. He gritted his teeth, sweat on his brow, but his voice was steady.

“Shoulder’s toast, sir… but I’ll live.”

Andrew, still on the floor, stared wide-eyed at the man who had just saved his life. “Why’d you do that?”

Rue looked down at him. “You’re the one with the brain. Me? I’m just the wall that holds back the stupid.”

Caleb knelt beside Rue and applied a field dressing. “That wasn’t stupid. That was valor.”

Rue looked at Caleb with a smirk. “Don’t get all poetic, sir. You still owe me bourbon.”

They moved quickly after that, Rue half-limping with Caleb’s help, Andrew securing what intel he could.

The mission had cost them blood, but they had seen the truth—up close and seared into memory.

And Rue had proven once again that old warfighters never forget how to protect their own.

As they retreated to the woods, Caleb looked at the blood on his hands and knew: there was no turning back.

“Found something,” Andrew muttered, typing furiously. “Folder labeled ‘Seraph Protocol – Phase I: ImmunoPriming.’”

“Like… vaccines?” Caleb asked, still covering the door.

Andrew nodded grimly. “Not vaccines. Trojan horses. The mRNA platforms were only the beginning—primers. They broke down immune resistance to allow targeted CRISPR modifications later. The vaccine was the invitation. The real guest was Nephilim DNA.”

Rue winced in pain but grunted, “And no one noticed?”

“They noticed,” Andrew said. “They just buried it.”
