Virginia: Where the Speed Limit Is 55, but the Toll Limit Is Whatever We Feel Like

Welcome to Virginia’s I-66 Express Lanes—America’s first state-sanctioned, algorithm-driven wallet vacuum. You thought price gouging was illegal? Ha! Not if you slap a “traffic congestion management” label on it and let a computer do the dirty work.

Here in the Old Dominion, we’ve perfected the art of legalized shakedowns. Forget hurricanes, floods, or snowstorms—our emergency is called “Monday morning.” Want to get to work without aging in traffic? That’ll be $45 for 10 miles, please. And no, you can’t pay in kidneys—we checked.

They call it variable tolling. Translation: “We’ll charge whatever we can get away with until the peasants revolt or run out of gas.” Supposedly it’s to “ease congestion,” which is government-speak for “turn your commute into an eBay bidding war where you’re always the sucker who wins.”

And don’t bother complaining—it’s not gouging if the state does it! It’s just “incentive-based traffic flow optimization.” In other words, a hostage situation with better branding.

Virginia: Where the roads are paved with your tears, and the tolls are powered by Wall Street’s imagination.
