In Washington, few topics guarantee funding quite like military suicide prevention. Stand up in a committee hearing and say you want to “save lives,” and the check practically writes itself. To vote against it is to be branded heartless. So year after year, Congress pours hundreds of millions—now climbing into the billions—into programs, hotlines, PowerPoints, and “resilience training.”
Here’s the hard truth: after all this money, there has been no statistically significant decrease in military suicides. None.
• In 2001, the Army’s suicide rate was 9.8 per 100,000 soldiers. By 2021, it had doubled to 21.9 per 100,000—despite over a decade of mandatory training, awareness campaigns, and resilience programs.
• The DoD stood up an entire Defense Suicide Prevention Office (DSPO), funded at over $30 million annually, and yet the numbers hold steady—or worse, climb.
• In FY 2025, the Pentagon has asked for $547 million more, including $261 million just to implement recommendations from yet another independent commission.
That’s a half-billion-dollar industry with no measurable success.
Meanwhile, an entire prevention workforce has been hired—thousands of government jobs built around suicide awareness training, briefings, and “culture change.” Great for careers. Not so great for results.
And here’s the kicker: it was never really an education problem. No soldier is unaware that suicide is irreversible. No airman needs a PowerPoint to explain what pulling the trigger does. We don’t need more slogans about “resilience” pasted on walls in the DFAC.
Instead of asking if a mandatory suicide-prevention brief will help, maybe we should ask if it’s time to recover what gives life dignity in the first place.
Because the data is in: billions spent, thousands of careers built, no real change. Suicide is not going to be fixed with another government-funded seminar. It’s not a PowerPoint problem. It’s a soul problem.
