Twenty-four years have passed since September 11, 2001, yet the memory remains sharp in our hearts.
We remember the horror of that morning—the towers burning, the Pentagon struck, the heroism aboard Flight 93, and the thousands of innocent lives lost in an instant. We remember the firemen who climbed stairwells, the police officers who cleared streets, the neighbors who became rescuers.
We remember the heartbreak. We remember the courage. And still, we learn new pieces of the story.
Today we know there was a fifth airplane—United Flight 23—scheduled to depart New York for Los Angeles. On board were passengers whose behavior raised quiet alarms. Though they insisted they would not eat during the flight, a stewardess refused to let the aircraft depart until the correct meals were properly loaded. That brief delay kept the plane on the ground when the attacks unfolded. A small act of diligence—an ordinary duty performed faithfully—may have prevented another unspeakable tragedy.
It reminds us that history turns not only on grand decisions, but also on seemingly small choices: a delay, a pause, a worker doing her job with integrity. In that stewardess’s determination, we glimpse providence—light breaking through the darkest morning.
On this twenty-fourth anniversary, we honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the countless families changed forever, and the heroes who rose in sacrifice. And we also give thanks for the unseen mercies—the plane that never left the runway, the lives that were spared, and the reminders that even in chaos, God’s hand is not absent.
We promise again: We will never forget.
We will never forget the lives lost, the courage shown, the unity born in the aftermath. And we will never forget the lesson that even the smallest act of faithfulness can alter the course of history.
May God comfort the grieving, strengthen the weary, and guide our nation toward justice, humility, and hope.
