You’d think that the world’s most powerful military, with a budget larger than the GDP of some countries, could manage something as simple as a car pool. But no — welcome to the Department of Defense, where each branch guards its motor pool like it’s the nuclear launch codes.
• The Army? They rent their admin cars and trucks from GSA like a corporate office in D.C. leasing Hondas for the interns. Tactical vehicles? Sure, that’s theirs. But if it’s got cup holders and cloth seats, it’s a GSA problem.
• The Air Force? Forget it. They’ve got an entire career field (Vehicle Management) just to prove they don’t need GSA. They’ll happily build a separate bureaucracy to manage sedans because, in their mind, every pickup truck is basically a weapons system when parked near a flightline.
• The Navy and Marines? Classic fence-sitters. Sometimes it’s GSA, sometimes it’s internal, depending on which admiral’s mood and which Marine colonel shouts the loudest.
And remember — this is all under one Department of Defense. One nation. One military. Four wildly different ways of deciding who gets to drive the Ford F-150.
Meanwhile, the GAO has been writing the same report for 50 years: “Hey guys, maybe consolidate fleets? You could save billions.” Billions. With a “B.” That’s the money we burn through in a few days of overseas operations, but apparently it’s too complicated to figure out who’s in charge of the minivan at Fort Wherever.
So here we are: cutting-edge stealth bombers, hypersonic missiles, cyber warfare — but when it comes to sedans and pickup trucks, the Pentagon is still basically four siblings fighting over who gets the car keys.
