Carl Sagan: America’s Prophet of Darkness–Smug Influencer, and Still Wrong After All These Years, Part III

PART III — Sagan vs. Human Psychology: Chase Hughes and Pageau Expose the Blind Spot

If Sagan had truly been the genius his fans imagined, he would’ve understood a basic fact about the human mind:

we’re persuadable, programmable, suggestible creatures.

Not because we’re dumb.

Because we’re symbolic.

Enter Chase Hughes, the military interrogation and behavioral-analysis expert.

Hughes shows that:

• Humans crave leadership

• Humans follow symbols

• Humans imitate patterns

• Humans are vulnerable to narrative

• Humans are driven by identity, not logic

• Humans can be behaviorally steered without force

• Humans default to “herd mode” under stress

• Humans seek meaning even in nonsense

This is exactly what the biblical worldview says — and exactly what Sagan never understood.

Sagan believed human progress would come from “critical thinking.”

But Hughes shows that critical thinking is a tiny slice of human behavior, overwhelmed by:

• emotional drivers

• instinctive pattern recognition

• social pressure

• moral intuition

• symbolic structures

• authority systems

Heiser understood this because the Bible understood this.

Pageau explains it through symbolism and pattern coherence.

Hughes explains it through behavioral science.

Sagan tried to build civilization on logic.

Every other serious thinker knows civilization is built on symbol, meaning, identity, and moral order.

That’s why Sagan failed.

He never understood humans.

He understood stars.

Stars do not rebel.

Humans do.

Stars do not self-deceive.

Humans do.

Stars do not collapse morally.

Humans do.

You can’t fix humans with stargazing.

Sagan warned America about superstition, but he didn’t understand how meaning collapses in a culture that denies transcendence.

Pageau does.

Heiser does.

Any biblical writer does.

Humans without transcendence don’t become rational.

They become confused, anxious, morally unmoored, and desperate for anything that looks like authority.

This is why the modern world looks exactly like the “demon-haunted” condition Sagan warned about —

because the West adopted Sagan’s worldview.

When you reject:

• God

• transcendence

• symbolic coherence

• moral hierarchy

• human vocation

• community

• covenant

• objective truth

• sacred pattern

• human identity linked to the divine

…you get:

• anxiety

• nihilism

• tribalism

• manipulation

• superstition

• conspiracy

• identity cults

• moral relativism

• psychological brittleness

• cultural collapse

Sagan blamed religion for this.

Reality shows he was projecting.

He wanted humans to be rational creatures.

But humans are meaning creatures.

Heiser knew that.

Pageau knows that.

Hughes proves it.

The Bible says it outright.

Sagan missed it because he was too busy lecturing Christians about their “mythologies” while constructing his own.

Closing

Carl Sagan’s legacy isn’t scientific enlightenment.

It is the intellectual equivalent of cotton candy:

sweet, aesthetic, impressive at first glance — but empty.

In the ended up being the one thing he spent his whole career mocking: a man rehashing ancient truths without understanding them.

And in the end?

Sagan described the world we get when people stop being imagers of God and start being worshipers of the cosmos.

It’s poetic, really.

Sagan tried to save humanity with stardust. Heiser tried to save humanity with truth.

Only one of them understood what humans actually are.
