Everyone’s talking about President Trump’s prime-time address to the nation on threats to our election integrity. As expected, the left is apoplectic, and the legacy media are spinning in overdrive. Gavin Newsom went so far as to call for the 25th Amendment, claiming Trump’s speech was the raving of a “Mad King.” There was even some grumbling on the right because the speech revealed “nothing new” and Trump didn’t announce any arrests.
With my background in communications, I wanted to comment on what the average American, who doesn’t follow every twist and turn, probably heard for the first time from the Bully Pulpit.
Trump came right out and said our elections are not secure. He laid out five key problems in some detail:
- China and voter data: China obtained records on 220 million Americans during his first term. Elements within the Deep State withheld this information from him and Congress.
- Michigan voter fraud: State police raided an organization engaged in voter fraud, and Biden’s FBI swept it under the rug.
- Non-citizen registrations: There are 278,000 foreigners registered to vote in four states. Trump said there are far more in places like California, but Democrat state governments refuse to let their voter rolls be audited.
- 2020 margin: The whole thing was decided by roughly 110,000 votes in key spots — to put that in context.
- Burn bags and machines: Trump confirmed “burn bags” with incriminating documents were found and called out Barack Obama by name. He also highlighted how hackable Smartmatic-style electronic voting machines are, with declassified docs showing the Maduro regime in Venezuela had access to them. People who said this years ago got sued and prosecuted.
For those who follow these issues closely, the speech confirmed much of what had been dismissed as conspiracy theories until Thursday night. But other shoes still haven’t dropped, such as findings from the FBI raid in Fulton County, Georgia, or the investigations in Maricopa County, Arizona.
Trump didn’t drop new bombshell evidence proving the 2020 election was stolen, as he’s maintained for years. A lot of the pre-speech hype from the media and pundits expected him to lay out the full case and announce major executive actions. Instead, he put the pressure on Congress—especially the Senate—to pass the Save America Act immediately. He encouraged everyone watching to call their elected officials and demand it get done. He also telegraphed that DHS would be announcing initiatives to secure voter rolls in every state (and Markwayne Mullin followed up the next day).
I believe there will now be real suspicion on any Senator who refuses to vote to secure our elections from cheating and foreign interference. Trump stated flatly that the only reason not to is to cheat. By not going the executive action route, Trump kind of head-faked the media and the left. Their social posts looked pre-written for a different speech, and guys like Senator Thom Tillis came out saying the Save America Act is going nowhere and would pass over their dead bodies.
Trump backed it all up by making the declassified documents available for download at WhiteHouse.gov. This speech sets up a direct challenge to Congress. If the public believes he made the case that our elections aren’t secure, the optics for those Senate holdouts could look highly suspicious. It’s been said the Save America Act would need to pass before the Senate leaves for summer recess in August to take effect before the midterms.
Given the short window, I expect this speech will be followed by more announcements and evidence drops before the first votes are cast. So we won’t have to wait long to find out if more shoes are going to drop.
Will Trump’s speech have an impact on the midterms?
We’ll soon see whether his words light a fire under Majority Leader Thune, but those of us who live and breathe politics may underestimate how normies will react to hearing these unprecedented disclosures from a sitting president.
Trump has a way of setting the narrative and shaping public opinion on his key initiatives, such as the border wall. Voter ID was already polling around 80/20, so it’s quite possible we’ll see increased support after the speech. And by refusing to air his address to the nation, the legacy news outlets may well have triggered a Streisand Effect.
