Polite society expects everyone to be good and punish those who are not good. Good being defined as living a lifestyle where rewards are earned – not entitlements just for being good. Most western nations compel citizens to earn their own way and charitably help those who struggle. However, liberalism has evolved into treating felons almost like visiting dignitaries, to wit: our own taxpayer-financed penal system. We allow those convicted of heinous crimes to luxuriate in an obligation-free, communist-style gated community with air-conditioning access to TV, college degrees and health privileges that even some of our good citizens don’t have.
A convict sent to prison because he was not good will be punished by incarceration in a not-so-polite society where rewards for being good are entitlements. These rewards include, but are not limited to: Phone privileges, expanded commissary allowances, more recreation time; job choice….
When finally released back into polite society the ex-con, expecting to be rewarded, tries to be good. When rewards are not forthcoming he soon, consciously or subconsciously, rewards himself by committing a crime guaranteeing his return to a luxuriating, obligation-free, communist-style gated community – where good behavior is rewarded. Who’s being punished: Taxpayer or criminal?
